Want to know the secret for a successful business? Here’s a hint: it’s not a marketing degree. It’s not a fancy website. And it’s not a topnotch business strategy. Now, these things can certainly contribute to a business’s growth, but at the end of the day, success begins with you. Specifically, your mind. As the CEO of your brand, everything falls back on you. That means that you need to take care of yourself, from your body to your soul to your mind.
Today we’re just focusing on the mind, and if you’ve read my previous posts, you would know that I have talked about the power of mindfulness, and how it can have an impact on reducing stress, improving your productivity and focus, and strengthening your decision-making skills. As a business owner, you should definitely be practicing mindfulness due to these amazing benefits! But if you’re unsure where to start, I have five easy activities for you:
1 - Embrace The Present Moment
When it comes to business, everyone is always discussing the importance of setting short-term and long-term goals that follow the S.M.A.R.T. method. And they’re absolutely right! Setting achievable goals and staying motivated in one’s business are essential for reaching future success, but it’s also necessary to pause. To breathe. To focus on the present moment. Being grounded helps you stay grateful for all that you have and all that you’ve achieved, plus keeps you mindful of what matters at this very moment. What can you do today for your business? What is your intention for today?
2 - Utilize Breathing Exercises
Breathing mindfully can bring mental clarity, not to mention much-needed relaxation and stress relief - all of which are essential for business success. Whether it’s at the start of your day or the end of it, find a quiet space and get comfortable. Inhale through your nose, then exhale through your mouth. Make these breaths long, steady, and nourishing. Repeat this sequence five times or how long you feel that you need it. If you feel that your mind is drifting away from your breathing and the rise and fall of your chest, readjust and refocus until you feel centered once more.
3 - Try Out Walking Meditation?
For most entrepreneurs, building their business is mostly done in a desk chair, perhaps in a home office, coworking space, or an actual office building. It’s easy to feel stuck and uninspired in a stuffy, maybe even lonely room. So take a break and head outside! Walk around, not too fast as if you’re rushing somewhere, and just focus on the steps you take, how your feet feel touching the ground. Refer back to my previous tip on breathing exercises; walking meditation can be a perfect opportunity to direct your thoughts towards your breath and not worry about anything else. Don’t let stressful thoughts about business strategies, content creation, or upcoming meetings deter you from this walking meditation; this is your chance to rest and gain a boost of energy that will help you keep going throughout your working day. Think of this activity as a cup of coffee!
4 - Practice Mindful Listening
Communicating effectively is essential in business (not to mention in one’s personal life), but we need to think about the other side of the coin here. It’s not just about what you say - it’s how you listen. Mindful listening requires you to focus solely on who’s speaking without distraction. Turn off pesky phone notifications, look directly at the speaker, and don’t let your thoughts wander. Don’t be thinking of responses as the person is talking, and when it’s actually your turn to speak, make sure you have considered what you are going to say. It’s not a good look for an entrepreneur to always be putting their foot in their mouth!

5 - Focus On Single-tasking Instead Of Multitasking
Did you know that multitasking can actually not help you achieve more tasks in less time? Some people just can’t multitask because it causes extra stress, which then leads to poor productivity and focus. Try working on one task at a time; when you solely focus on one task or project, you can give it all the attention it needs, leading to it being done successfully and correctly. Not to mention, you’ll feel more efficient and less overwhelmed. At the end of the day, this is what matters when it comes to business success. They say work smarter, not harder, but let’s normalize working the way that works best for you.
Mindfulness can be a powerful tool for you as you start and grow your business; if you haven’t been utilizing it yet, I strongly suggest that you implement it into your daily routine and witness the before-and-after differences. If you currently practice mindfulness, what are your favorite activities? I would love to know - make sure to comment below!
