The 5 Levels of Team Training Learned from The Navy

The 5 Levels of Team Training Learned from The Navy

Do you struggle to integrate new team members? Do you ever find that you’re just too busy to train them in all the things you want to? You’re not alone!

This is one of the most common issues we find in new entrepreneurs. Once their business starts expanding and they need more staff, they struggle with teaching them in an efficient and effective way. We’re here to help!

Before founding Abundance Global, I've spent 18 years in the Australian Navy, a space where a leader’s decisions can literally be life or death. This meant the training for new commanders was rigorous and focused on the importance of leadership ethic and how to manage a team. We want to pass on to you the 5 levels of team training I brought back with me from the military.

The first level is the simplest one. You’re out there, doing your thing, playing the master craftsman. There’s a ‘you’ but there’s not yet any ‘them’.

The next level is when you first bring someone on board. You’re still doing the work, but now they’re watching.

On the third level, instead of you doing the work, you watch them as they give it a go.

The fourth is you let them do it on their own, but then you review. This is the critical point, especially if it’s anything to do with sales. This is your mentoring stage. Bring them back in, ask what worked for them, what didn’t, what they might need clarity on. Then once you’re confident with their ability to do that, you head on to the last stage.

They create the training material themselves. They create the standard operating procedure. Instead of that becoming another thing on your already packed to-do list, let them do it! It’ll help cement the knowledge for them and will also encourage in them that strong sense of agency and initiative that every good team member should have.

Then we’ve come full circle, and they’re now the ones doing the procedures until they’re ready to train the next ones.

That’s it! It’s that simple. This is the technique that the military has used for years to consistently train their officers, and it’s just as important for every business to grow and especially to scale! It’s concise, it’s effective, and it’ll help you make those decisions and achieve that standard that really will be life or death for your business.

Dr David Dugan, thank you for sharing and making me smile, remembering good times in the Royal Australian Navy. The system exists for mine to: learn your craft, move to mastery and then lead to create leaders. Onboarding is simply the first step in an ongoing journey of inclusion to optimise individual performance and organisational outcomes. I was fortunate to work for and alongside some whose example still resonates: Will Martin Vince Di Pietro Tony Raeside Peter Scott, CSC Go well. #military #leadership #empowerment #emotionalintelligence
