5 Lessons About Government Contracting I Wish I Knew Earlier

I've been in government contracting since 2007. Want to know five BIG things I've learned that'll save you some major headaches? If you're in this industry or thinking about jumping in, pay attention.?

Be Open to Continuous Learning?

You must continue to learn, apply and adjust. You'll never know everything about government contracting. It's always changing because it’s tied to politics. Rules and regulations are constantly shifting. Look at how ADA, women-owned, and? Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) set-aside requirements have changed. Trust Your Gut?

I know it sounds easier said than done, but trust yourself. When I started, I was super insecure, always looking for answers from others. Nope. The answer is within you. Do what's best for you.

Know Your Goals?

Big lesson here. In the beginning, I wanted to be like everyone else - my mentor , and everyone else I saw as successful in government contracting. I thought I had to do modeling, simulation, staffing. Now? I do what I want. I'm confident, focused on abundance, love, and light. Don't copy and paste somebody else's success. It won’t work.?

Trust Other People Want to grow and scale? You can't do it alone. Trust your outsourced help - including subcontractors and employees. But be clear about what you want, how you want it, when you want it. Set up quality control, project management, contract management. You can't grow solo. There’s nothing wrong with a one-person business, but you can still get help.

Be Prepared to be Disappointed?

Look, this is business. Teaming partners, employees, the government - they're not your friends or family. You can't fire your family, but you can let employees go.?

Set your emotions aside. And no, there’s nothing wrong with emotions, but remember this is business.
