5 Life Lessons From My Mom/Mentor - Jacqueline L Horn RIP 10-17-2000
5 Lessons From My Mom - RIP 10-17-2000
I remember my mom making $7,500 a year as an art teacher having to support three bombastic boys by herself without financial support from my dad. I was 8 at the time but can remember the inner turmoil within our household.
Mom was determined to find a way to support us and herself. So she went into Real Estate understanding if she didn't sell anything she made $0. Even if she sold something it could take months and the house still had to pass inspection as well as have a good appraisal. It was a difficult and challenging time in her life and I can remember her crying at night as I would secretly listen at her bedroom door. But something happened...
She focused on where she could go and not where she was. She surrounded herself with experts through reading, sales training and listened to tapes every day. She found a mentor and acted on his advice. Soon she started selling homes in a time when interest rates on home loans were 19%. It didn't deter her as everyone else was getting out of Real Estate in a down market. She believed that would give her, even more clients to serve as the bad and so so agents were nowhere to be found.
Within a couple years she became one of the top producing realtors in her company. 5 years later she started her own real estate business, Jacqueline Horn Realty. Watching my mom inspired me and instilled a “can do” attitude in the face of multiple challenges. She educated herself on how to invest, budget, and save. In 10-17-2000 she lost her battle with cancer and I lost my mom. She had become my good friend as well as my business mentor.

5 Lessons From My Mom – Jacqueline L. Horn
- Follow Your Passion - What's the difference between having a passion and having a hobby? A passion drives you and keeps you up at night. She was driven to make a better life and provide for her kids and herself.
- Be Creative and Have Fun – I can remember the many visits she had with her clients after the sale or purchase of their home. She would laugh with them as they talked about the crazy things that went on during the process. Great memories!
- Utilize the Resources Around You - What are your resources and how can you utilize them to accomplish something important to you? She got a mentor and followed his advice. She leveraged the relationships she had with sincerity and became the go-to realtor in our city.
- Relentless Pursuit for Improvement – What can you do to improve? My mom took it upon herself to take notes while with her mentor and apply them. She read, listened to tapes on selling, and attended countless sales trainings. She understood the importance of being coachable, resourceful and decisive.
