5 Lessons in Bravery and Resiliency: Learning from My 5-Year-Old on her 5th Birthday

As a Chief Marketing Architect, there is a relentless pace—my days are typically a whirlwind of GTM planning, campaign launches, and virtual boardroom collaborations. However, recently, I had the privilege of stepping away from the luminous glow of the computer screen, to revel in a few precious days with my cherished family.

Last weekend, we embarked on a quick journey to Vancouver Island to celebrate my daughter's 5th birthday ahead of Thanksgiving, her birthday party, and upcoming work trips. Raya, my daughter, had her heart set on the Hotel Zed —a place dripping in rainbows, offering a nostalgic array of activities like ping pong, bike rides, and video games arcade beeps that transcended generations. Of course, her favourite is the classic waterslide, open year-round for guests to enjoy.

Our adventure took us to the awe-inspiring Malahat Skywalk , the enchanting Victoria Bug Zoo , the captivating Miniature World , the exhilarating Flying Squirrel trampoline park, and the spellbinding American Crown Circus Cinco Osorio . Little did I know, these experiences would serve as a masterclass in bravery and resilience, all orchestrated by a 4-turning-5-year-old.

1. Malahat Skywalk

Our odyssey led us to the Malahat Skywalk, a precipice where the trees whispered ancient secrets and the vista unfurled like a tapestry of dreams. Here, my daughter's eyes ignited like constellations, embodying a lesson etched in my memory.

In marketing, as in life, it's the embrace of the unknown, the audacious leap into uncharted territories that often yields the most glorious vistas. This towering walkway was a crucible of transformation, forging a bond between fear and triumph. Every step on the Adventure Net was a testament to resilience; a living, breathing masterclass in courage.

Once at the top, we had the opportunity to walk across the Adventure Net, 10 storey's above the BC forest.

2. Victoria Bug Zoo

The Victoria Bug Zoo, a sanctuary for the minuscule, unfolded a world teeming with life beyond the naked eye's gaze. Amidst this miniature menagerie, I unearthed a revelation—a reminder that it's the microscopic elements, meticulously woven into the grand tapestry, that leaves an indelible mark.

In marketing, the whispered nuances—the subtleties of design, the cadence of a message—are the unassuming heroes that etch campaigns into memory. The Walking Sticks were our favourite. The ant colony was fascinating as well.

3. Miniature World

Miniature World, an opus of diminutive grandeur, held a mirror to the intricacies of scale. A world within a world, it echoed the paramount importance of knowing one's audience. In marketing, understanding their aspirations, their fears, their dreams, is akin to wielding the key to a kingdom.

Tailoring the message, sculpting the experience, it's a symphony of empathy, a crescendo that resonates with the hearts of those you seek to captivate.

Miniature World had lots of surprises in store.

4. Flying Squirrel

The Flying Squirrel and Trampoline Park, a realm of gravity-defying leaps and bounds, echoed a truth etched in every marketer's journey—setbacks are but interludes in the grand symphony of success.

Bouncing back, soaring higher, it's the resilient spirit that ignites the journey towards the pinnacle. The trampoline, a canvas of setbacks, is not a crucible of failure but a forge of transformation.

Raya's brother Grady is almost 10 and she goes to extreme lengths and heights to keep up with him.
This little wild flower never gives up and it's her bravery in these moments that push me to do my best.

5. American Crown Circus Cinco Osorio

In the embrace of the American Crown Circus Cinco Osorio, where acrobats danced on the precipice of human potential,

I saw a reflection of the marketer's canvas—an arena where imagination unfurls its wings and soars. It echoed a call to dare, to dream, to push the boundaries of what's conceivable.

Trust and communication go hand-in-hand, especially when taking extreme risks.

Reaching New Heights

As I reflect on these chapters etched in time, I'm reminded that wisdom often wears the cloak of the unexpected, and this time, it emanated from the heart of a 5-year-old luminary.

Celebrating reaching new heights, here the kids are at 8 storey's high, on the way to 10.

Bravery, risk-taking, attention-to-detail, understanding your audience, and resilience—these are not mere principles but keystones that bridge the realms of parenting and marketing.

Here's to the odysseys that illuminate our path, no matter our years. Let's forge ahead with the unyielding determination and wide-eyed wonder of a 5-year-old, for who can fathom the heights we might yet reach. Have a great week everyone!

Once we returned from a quick family getaway, it was time for Raya's party with friends! Our family also completed an impromptu communication activity when we worked together on this balloon arch.
