From Sydney to the Big Apple: Lessons Learned from a Year of Tech, Transition, and Personal Transformation
It’s been just over a year since I traded the sun-soaked shores of Australia for the bustling streets of New York City. Reflecting on this past year, I’ve encountered a whirlwind of experiences that have shaped both my personal life and professional career. From grappling with a new country’s systems to diving deep into the advanced AI sector, and embracing the cultural mosaic of the U.S., each moment has been a step in my journey of growth and understanding. Here are five pivotal learnings from my first year as an Australian expat working in a U.S. tech company.
1. Navigating the Complexities of Advanced AI in a New Professional Environment
Working alongside some of the most advanced AI companies has been as thrilling as it is challenging. The pace of innovation here is blistering, and keeping up requires an agile approach to continuous learning and adaptation. One of the biggest professional learnings has been the importance of staying flexible and open to new methods and technologies.
Key Takeaway: Embrace change and stay ever-curious. Whether it’s a new programming language, a pioneering AI model, or an unconventional project management tool, the willingness to learn and adapt has been crucial. This environment rewards those who are proactive and eager to step outside their comfort zone.
2. Adjusting to a New Country: The Rollercoaster of Relocation
Moving to the U.S. brought with it the daunting task of understanding a completely different set of cultural and systemic norms. From figuring out healthcare and taxes to navigating public transport in a sprawling city, each task has been a learning curve. Yet, this journey has been incredibly rewarding, pushing me to grow in resilience and adaptability.
Key Takeaway: Patience is key. Take it one step at a time and don’t hesitate to ask for help. Americans are generally forthcoming with assistance and advice. Engaging with local communities and expat groups has also been invaluable in smoothing this transition.
3. Experiencing the Extremes of the U.S.
Living in the U.S. has exposed me to some of the most amazing and some of the most challenging aspects of a country known for its extremes. On one hand, I’ve enjoyed the vibrancy of New York City, with its Broadway shows, diverse food scene, and endless opportunities for exploration. On the other hand, I’ve encountered the frustrating inefficiencies of the U.S. payment systems and the stark inequalities that pervade society.
Key Takeaway: Every place has its highs and lows. Embrace the positives while advocating for and contributing to improvements. Understanding these extremes has broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for both the opportunities and challenges that exist here.

4. Embracing New Experiences While Staying True to My Roots
Living in the U.S. has opened up a world of new experiences — from Broadway shows in New York City to exploring the vast landscapes of the country. Each adventure has brought a sense of excitement and wonder that is truly unique to the American experience. However, being so far from family and friends has also taught me the importance of building a new community and finding ways to stay connected to my Australian roots.
Key Takeaway: Balance is essential. It’s important to immerse yourself in the new and unknown while finding ways to maintain the connections that define who you are. Through social media, regular calls, and even local Australian meet-ups, I’ve managed to keep the home fire burning, which has been crucial for my emotional well-being.
5. The Importance of Aligning to Your Values
In the fast-paced world of tech, it’s easy to get swept up in the latest trends and forget what truly matters. Over the past year, I’ve learned the importance of making choices that align with my core values. Whether it’s choosing projects that have a positive impact, working with companies that prioritize ethics, or simply making time for personal reflection and growth, staying true to my values has been essential.
Key Takeaway: Your values are your compass. They guide your decisions and keep you grounded. In a rapidly changing environment, staying aligned with your values ensures that your professional and personal growth is both meaningful and fulfilling.
Bonus: Data is Key
Throughout this year, I’ve realized the immense power of data in both my personal and professional life. I’ve tracked every place I’ve traveled using Strava, monitored my progress towards goals, documented the number of Broadway shows I’ve seen, and recorded where and how much I’ve skied. This data has provided a clear picture of how far I’ve come and the experiences I’ve accumulated.
Key Takeaway: Leverage data to track progress and celebrate achievements. Whether it’s professional milestones or personal adventures, having tangible metrics helps you appreciate your journey and stay motivated for future goals.
Final Thoughts
This past year has been a mosaic of challenges and triumphs, each experience paving the way for personal and professional growth. Whether it’s learning from the forefront of AI technology, adapting to a new cultural and systemic landscape, or balancing new experiences with cherished traditions, the journey has reinforced key life lessons: growth comes from embracing the new, challenging the unknown, and always staying true to your values. Here’s to another year of learning and adventure in the U.S.!
