5 keys to building a great Executive Team

What does it take to build the right Executive Leadership team?

What makes for an effective Executive team?


An effective and high-performing Executive team takes hard work to achieve. Its not quite as simple as bringing together a group of people in different roles and then it just happens by itself.?

A high-performing and effective Executive team sets the groundwork for success across an organisation given that their leadership filters down into each of the functional divisions.?


So what are the key factors in building a high-performing and effective Executive Team?

  1. Chemistry?
  2. Trust
  3. The right people in the right roles at the right time - Clearly attracting top performers is important but its also about having the right people for a particular stage of an organisation’s lifecycle. For example, some people are suited to high-growth businesses, some to transformation or turn-around roles. Understanding where the organisation is at and bringing in the right people for that phase is incredibly important.
  4. Diversity - This isn’t just about gender, race, etc. This is about building a team with people from different backgrounds who think differently and will challenge ideas. This leads to the best innovation.
  5. Expectations - Setting expectations is important, not only will this impact the way the Executive team interact with each other but they also set the tone for behaviours across the organisation so getting it right at the top is crucial.
