What do you learn after coaching 6,500+ clients and more than 10,000 hours? The list is endless therefore this is one of the hardest blogs for me to write. To distill it down to 5 key takeaways is extremely difficult yet powerful as well.
Follow Your Passion
My most successful clients in coaching, across the board, have followed their passion in life, not just in business. This applies to career, executive and entrepreneur clients alike. It also applies to me. I’ve been able to coach over 6K clients because I pursued my passion in coaching. I love what I do and I bring it to the table each and every time I speak with a client. It’s a clear differentiator with my clients. Because of this it ignites their passion within and we can focus on how to mentally, emotionally, physically and financially pursue their passions and they’ve done so successfully time and time again.
Fit Matters
Anytime you start working with a potential coach there should be an initial free session offered. This is because any coach worth their weight in salt is going to ensure you’re a good fit for them and vice versa. We want to be able to coach you to your peak performance and reach your objectives. That means that we sometimes turn clients away. Yes, that’s right, we don’t accept all clients. You have your industry and professional expertise as do we. You want to find a coach that’s the right fit for you and this is done during the initial coaching session, which should always be free.
Gratitude is Essential
The gratitude I have for a successful coaching business, doing what I love and clients who are happy with their results is overwhelming. The clients that have the best results are those that are grateful in life, in business, for their success (be it limited or great), and for the ability to work with a coach to find greater success. As I say, be grateful for what you have today and you’ll have more to be grateful for tomorrow.
You Set The Boundaries
Boundaries are essential anywhere in life – relationships, work, family and more. That said, they’re set by you and are respected by those around you. When I first began coaching I had clients text, email and call all days of the week and all hours of the day. After coaching 10,000 hours you learn that your life has to have boundaries, even for clients. I now respond to clients M-F, 8a-8p, with a few exceptions of course. If you fail to set boundaries, you are the one responsible for what happens, or doesn’t.
Boundaries also include geography. I learned early on that when a new client called from Europe I wanted, had, to find a way to work with them. I’ve now had clients in North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia. My clients have moved across the country, and world, in search of new opportunities that some didn’t realize were possible until they opened up those geographical boundaries. I had a client in Chicago weigh an opportunity in Kuwait against one in London and yet another chose to stay in the Midwest.
Health Matters
Our health is critical to success in life. Without it, we have lost everything. I have had the honor of coaching clients facing cancer, chronic disease and other life-altering health challenges. These health issues are ones they chose to live with and pursue life changes in parallel. I know this experience first-hand as I live with chronic pancreatic disease daily. If you put your health first, the rest will fall in line and we can coach you to your peak performance in life, not just in your professional life.
