5 key takeaways from Microsoft's International Women's Day event

Ahead of International Women’s Day on Saturday 8th March, 微软 invited both employees and partners down to Thames Valley Park yesterday to recognise the contributions of women in technology, discuss the barriers that are still in place, and to explore how everyone can put this year’s theme – Accelerate Action – into practice.

Sophie Marshall , our Alliances and Partner Director, and Jess Primrose , Senior Sales Development Representative, were both in attendance to be part of the conversation and to share their learnings with the business. With so many important discussions taking place throughout the day – from fireside chats with Microsoft’s Chief AI Officer and UK Head of HR, to interviews with a British Army Medic – Sophie and Jess returned with plenty to share with everyone.

Sharing stories

The event kicked off with Amanda Sleight , General Manager for UK Public Sector at Microsoft, sharing her own story – in addressing the challenges being faced in the industry, hearing first-hand accounts and real examples plays a huge role.

Amanda spoke about her journey in the industry, the importance of building supportive communities, and how it takes a village to raise children. She also highlighted the significance of mentors and sponsors in career growth, advising women to seek both male and female mentors who can provide valuable guidance and open doors of opportunity.

Building diverse teams

A panel of partners then discuss the importance of building diverse teams in technology. The importance of diversity has long been known, but businesses must take action to make it a reality. Hiring teams need training in understanding bias, job adverts can be reworded, and wider skillsets considered in the hiring process.

The panel went on to stress the importance of accommodating employees’ personal lives and providing greater support for people’s mental health. By making that space, organisations will improve their staff retention and, as a result, create a more inclusive environment.

Developing a growth mindset

When Pamela Maynard , Microsoft’s Chief AI Officer, spoke about the importance of a growth mindset, she emphasised the importance of consistent curiosity. By making the most of learning opportunities, surrounding yourself with the right people, and sharing experiences, you create an ambitious and inclusive culture.

Pamela emphasized the need for creating community opportunities for women to connect, share their experiences, and to empower one another. By fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth, women can achieve greater success in their careers and inspire others around them.

The importance of allyship

In a male-dominated industry like technology, men play a critical role in establishing equality. The role of men as allies and sponsors was a key theme throughout the event, because creating inclusive environments is to the benefit of everybody – your colleagues, customers, and the business overall.

A panel on allyship discussed the importance of continually asking question, challenging bias, and a creating a culture of learning. By actively listening and learning how to be the best ally possible, people across the business can support women in achieving their goals and creating a more inclusive industry.

Creating opportunities

While the event was a perfect opportunity to network with industry peers, it also highlighted the importance of doing so. Talks explored building a personal brand, seeking advice from mentors, and the role that we all play in each other’s success.

Change doesn’t happen by itself. Events like Microsoft’s provide an amazing opportunity to work together, with an entire industry pulling in the same direction and working towards the same outcome.

We're working towards a brighter future for everyone.
