5 key learning for aspiring HR Leaders

??I became the Country Head of HR of a large Multinational at the age of 32.

??Here are my 5 key learnings when I look back down the memory lane a decade later for all those aspiring to become HR Leaders:

My organisation valued integrity, which aligned with my personal values, making me comfortable. However, punctuality was also highly valued, and I initially struggled with it. To fit in, I worked on aligning my values with the organisation's, and with some effort, I managed to do so. Luckily, it was achievable. If it had been a value I couldn't align with, it would have been challenging to stay in the organisation.

HR often finds it easy to say yes, but it's crucial to learn to say no to prevent team burnout. When I took over the function, I noticed my team was overwhelmed, leading to late sittings and exhaustion. To address this, I implemented SLAs and managed stakeholders' expectations, setting realistic turnaround times. Saying no didn't mean refusal, but it allowed the team to breathe and avoid perpetual burnout.

When I took charge, all employee data was stored in disorganised cabinets, causing significant delays in finding information. To address this, we embarked on a transformation journey that took over a year of hard work and dedication. But in the end, we succeeded in digitising the data, allowing us to access any information with a simple click. This saved us countless hours of pointless manual searching and made our work much more efficient.

I experienced many mistakes, including onboarding several bad hires. One of my worst hires was a district sales manager who turned out to be an alcoholic, causing disruptions and issues within the team. However, rather than dwelling on the mistake, I chose to learn from it and find ways to prevent similar situations in the future.

Being the youngest Country HR Manager, I felt immense pressure to live up to expectations, leading to high impostor syndrome. I sought validation from others to feel better about myself, which I regret.

If I could go back, I'd equip myself with the tools to overcome impostor syndrome and embrace my success fully. Now, I focus on helping HR professionals with their impostor syndrome and confidence, so they can be confident leaders without relying on others' validation.

If you want to discuss how I can assist you in achieving this, feel free to reach out for a chat.

P.S A big shout out to my team at Abudawood. I love how much I was supported by my team and guided in this role by my mentor. Writing this post brought back so many memories. I miss you all.
