There is one thing that remains despite changing market conditions and restructures in some industries and that is the consistent struggle to find great people for growing businesses particularly in the construction, engineering, transport and technology markets.
Coupled with a shortage of skilled staff in these industries, we are also finding companies are wanting more than ever to have that competitive advantage of a diverse workforce, adaptability for changing market conditions and a team that they want to go to work with and enjoy it every day.
Companies who are successful in hiring the best talent in the business don't do it based on sheer luck alone- we've found there are some underpinning common concepts companies understand and apply to hire great people.
1. They know what they have to offer
They can tell you exactly what their employee value proposition is.
They live and breathe it.
They know they've got the best systems and processes, the lucrative projects or a hybrid model with employee shares and profit incentives.
It's something that comes natural to them and they know how to communicate it to their current staff and prospective employees.
2. They analyse competitors and understand their point of difference
These companies know there is a job out there for everyone and each company has a different offering.
For them it's not about competing on salary alone but rather knowing what they have to offer in the role including their incentives package and where it sets against others in the market.
They understand where they are positioned and can speak to it well.

3. They value the employee experience and your time
They've put thought into their recruitment process to add value to you and make your decision to join as easy as possible.
They provide you with a position description, role overview and interview feedback within designated timeframes.
For them, they are giving you insight into what it is like to work in their company so valuing your time and contribution in the hiring process is critical.
4. They have a robust process to assess cultural fit and technical capability
They know the type of person who works well in their business and have robust processes that assess it.
Whether it be behavioural interviewing, psychometric profiling, technical assessment exercises or industry recommendations- they know the formula to assess for success and they apply it consistently.
5.They know how to engage and speak to you as an individual
You aren't just a number to them. You are someone they want to go and work beside every day.
They value your family, study and career aspirations and they take the time to delve deeper into you as an individual.
When they offer you a role they know it's the right one for you because they understand your individual motivators and can speak to them with confidence.
They also want to make you feel comfortable so they answer your questions, speak openly about their salary offer and they personalise it for you.
Great companies make our job twice as time easier because it becomes more about finding the right fit rather than moulding the right environment to hire the right staff.
For us, it's about getting it all right and when all the pieces work together in partnership that's where the true power of hiring the right fit can truly make a difference.
