5 Industries in huge trouble and 1 that needs to make a comeback
“In the rush to return to normal, let’s use this time to consider which parts of normal are worth rushing back to” - Dave Hollis.
I was pondering which industries are not worth rushing back to, and which are. I'm going to list 5 industries that are in huge trouble today and where IMHO it would be best for the planet and for mankind if they simply didn't come back at all after the Corona crisis but gently faded into oblivion, or survived in a poorer, more sustainable, leaner form..
And also there's one that really needs to make a comeback. Now.
1. The Cruise ship industry
The biggest polluter of them all. One cruise ship in a single day emits the same volume of CO2 as 20.000 cars in a year. You can check this, it's true. I'm sure people can find less destructive ways to spend a holiday.
2. Influencers
Honestly, who isn't happy to see the back of those insufferable influencers? Go get yourselves a proper job, kids.
3. The fashion and luxury industry
Now that everyone is at home we start realizing how utterly pointless it is to have clothes, bags and accessories that cost multiples of what they should, without doing a better job, just because there's a label on it. The luxury brands are scared because the schmucks are beginning to see they are an emperor without clothes. Good. Never ever buy Louis Vuitton again please.
4. Big Sports
They're losing billions of revenue and the entire world is like: so what? And rightly so. Sports will be back, everyone likes sports. But they can be just as entertaining with 1/10th of the cash they had recently. Those footbal and soccer players will play just as well for merely good instead of astronomical money. Let Big Sports shed some weight. That'll do them good.
5. Real Estate
Time to review our relationship with real estate. For work we've discovered we can do with 1/3 or less of the space we used. It's been a revelation how much we can do with video conferencing. We'll still need some office space, we've seen the limits of WFH also. But not nearly as much as we used to. And in our homes now that we have less money we need to start asking the hard questions: why is it justified to pay half your income towards rent/mortgage? Why not regulate rents and fix maximums? What exactly do landlords and Real Estate investors contribute to society? I see your lips forming the word: nothing. Regulate this industry.
Now the one thing that needs to come back very fast?
Government
Efficient, effective, humane, legitimate, well managed government. We need it, and the whole notion that markets would take care of things was always a (corporate sponsored) fantasy. Time to vote out all those free-market-is-everything scoundrels and make this world a more responsible and sustainable place.
