5 Ideas to Start Your 2023 Investing the Right Way
By Tracy Gallman , Senior Vice President Axos Invest, Axos Bank
Surviving 2022 was an accomplishment in and of itself. But with everything barreling our way in 2023, expect the journey back to investing normalcy to be more of a marathon than a sprint.
Of course, the good news is that history proves any downturns in a bear market will eventually turn and start to improve. Track every bear market during the past century and you’ll find it was followed by a bull run, often sending stock prices soaring to new highs. So even facing the challenges that 2023 may bring, rest assured that the future always brings a glimmer of hope and promise.?
But that doesn’t mean you should just sit back and wait for the good times to start back up again.?As you roar into 2023, consider these ideas to better set yourself up for a fantastic new year.
1. Prepare Early
Nobody said you had to do everything at once, but you can get a jump on this new year by starting immediately. Try writing out a plan of action, then do a little each day, and ask for help if needed. That way, you can take things at your own pace without the fear of being overwhelmed. You may have missed the opportunity to properly prepare for 2022, but you can get a jump on this new year by starting immediately. It’s never too late!
2. Get Organized
This is a great time of year to declutter your home, update your computer files, and organize all those financial records. Be sure to shred any documents with confidential information. Consider making a backup of your computer and updating all your passwords. Or just use a handy password manager so you don’t even have to remember them.
3. Reflect
Take a moment to assess what you’ve done over the past year. Did you follow through on what you planned to accomplish at the beginning of 2022? On paper, list out the major areas of your life – family, career, spirituality, fitness, finances, etc. – and define goals for each. By making those decisions now, you’ll set yourself up for an even better year in 2023.
4. Learn
There’s always more to learn. What’s been on your mind lately? Dive into something that has recently piqued your interest by reading or listening to books, connecting with experts in the field, attending a class on the subject – or all three. Into investing? 5. Reconnect
The last few years have been jam-packed and heaped with loads of stress for most people. Get off your grind for a minute and take the time to reconnect with family and friends. Reach out to people who you’ve lost touch with over the years. The warmth and rekindling of those relationships will enrich you and them.
Anything else?
Once you’ve gotten these basics out of the way, you can start examining all the nitty-gritty details of your financial wellness.?
Have you made any updates to your list of beneficiaries in the last 12 months? Are all your current insurance needs covered? Is your emergency savings account holding 3 to 6 months’ worth of expenses just in case? Have you decided to make any charitable donations? Or maybe a contribution to a college fund?
Of course, each of these areas can require a close examination. And it’s worth mentioning that your portfolio could also use an extensive once-over just to make sure all of your investments are diversified, age and risk appropriate, and working toward your specific time horizon.
