5 Ideas for Improving Digital Communication in 2020

Technology’s primary role is to improve the ways we communicate. Whether that communication is one-to-one or one-to-many, permanent or ephemeral, immediate or asynchronous, there are thousands of new ways we can communicate with each other every year. And only the greatest ideas survive.

Sometimes the innovation isn’t even about new ideas, but about applying old technology to a new field. For instance, families are using workplace management software like Asana and Trello to keep their family chores and activity schedules in order:

Below I’ve curated five of my ideas for communication innovation that solve problems I frequently find myself encountering.

Ideas to improve One-To-One communication:

SMS Spam Filter (link)

I’m getting more text message spam in 2020 than I ever have in my life. Ideally, our SMS inboxes could incorporate a spam filter like email that uses machine learning to sift out incoming spam for users.

MeMoji Text Message AutoResponder (link)

When my iPhone is in Do Not Disturb mode it would be cool if I could set up my MeMoji to auto respond for me. Similar to the autoresponder I can setup on my email when I’m out of office but with MeMojis.

Ideas to improve One-To-Many communication:

A Citywide Chatbot for Sharing Date Night Ideas (link)

What if every city had a WhatsApp messenger bot (or Telegram channel) that sent you date night ideas? This chatbot would gather ideas from couples, curate based on how those couples reviewed them, and even turn a profit in the same way Groupon does.

A Social Network for Sharing Holographic Reviews (link)

Text-based restaurant reviews have been the status for decades. A video-based review site would greatly improve how we decide on the best place to eat. One step further would be anchoring these videos to a location based on geospatial data and converting them into holograms we could view through our smartphones (and one day AR glasses).

A Twitch Network for Book Clubs and Read-Alongs (link)

Apart from Goodreads, there aren’t many digital platforms for book lovers. A livestreaming site like Twitch for books would be an interesting way to host live read alongs, book clubs, and book discussions.

What do you think of these ideas? What are some of your ideas for improving our digital communication?
