Some Hotel Manager seem to naturally know how to start a conversation. During their shift they can start conversations anywhere, with their Staff, during Training, whilst at work in the Hotel … Everybody always admires these rare people?
Learning how to start a conversation easily and effectively has been one of the key issues in developing my Hotel Manager skills, and this is a big part of why I also used to enjoy teaching it.
Tip 1 Forget What You Think You Know About Starting a Conversation Do not over-emphasize the importance of politeness or over impressing your conversational priority; however once you do become confident with starting a conversation, do start conversations with anyone with whom an opportunity arises in your Hotel or Department.
Tip 2 Critically: Always Be Friendly Forget about impressing people when you start a conversation. Your goal as a Hotel Manager is not to impress, it is to show that you are a relaxed and sociable person who wants to have a friendly chat. Being friendly is demonstrated mostly by your non-verbals … smile and hold eye contact, breath regularly and relax your body and keep your posture open and non-threatening.
Tip 3 Ask Good Questions One of the most important tools for a Hotel Manager engaging another person in a conversation is your curiosity - the way you ask questions, which is one Hotel Manager skill I think is critical? Ask big, open-ended questions that require more than a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer. The questions you ask should be authentic and reflect your honest interests.
Tip 4 Preparation Is Fine If you struggle when starting conversations in certain circumstances, it’s fine to use conversation starters you have learned ahead of time and practiced before. These are not conversation lines you use robotically; they are always adjusted to you and to the social context. However, it is really dangerous for a Hotel Manager to become too dependant upon conversation starters. As your conversation and people skills improve, memorized conversations starters are best to be left behind as a Hotel Manager.
Tip 5 Always Remember a Conversation involves at least two people Nobody wants to feel like they are being bombarded by questions when they are having a conversation with their Hotel Manager: What do you do? Where do you live? Where do you work? Where are you from? What hobbies do you have? Always talk about yourself in a conversation - It is not rude.
Finally, if I were to say to a Hotel Manager how to start a conversation in one concise phrase, it would be this: Use a combination of friendliness, curiosity, authenticity and Hospitality; this mix is critical for any Hotel Manager and will open up more options even during your busiest of Hotel shifts.
