The 5 Horrors of Job Hunting

The 5 Horrors of Job Hunting

It’s the spooky season with Halloween being celebrated today, so what better time to look at the scarier aspects of job hunting? Looking for a new job can be an adrenaline rush, but are there some parts that have you hiding under your duvet? Or keeping you awake so you feel more like a zombie than a potential employee?! It doesn’t have to be scary, so here are our top tips for making the whole process less frightening and more fun.

Horror One: Repetitive Job Applications

It can be difficult to get excited about filling in yet another job application and making it sound interesting when you just want to copy and paste everything from your last one. So how do you deal with it?

Before you start an application, make sure you do a little research on the company. Not only will it help you ensure that you are applying for a role that will suit you, but it will also help you align your application with their values. And try to remember, by filling in the application, you show the recruiter that you are really interested in the role, and not just mailing CVs to every company that’s recruiting.

Terror Two: Being unprepared for interviews

It is a terrifying moment when you realise you haven’t prepared enough for the interview; even more so if you have prepared and then an unexpected question is thrown at you! The best solution, in this case, is the obvious one – go in prepared. Do your research, practice answering tough questions, and think in advance about the questions you would like to ask them when given the opportunity.

Shocker Three: The skeletons in your closet

Gaps in your employment history, a short stay at a role you hated, even the reason you want to leave your current position. An interviewer is likely to dig deep and make sure you have no secrets lurking that could impact your employment with them. So be prepared to take off your mask, and answer honestly and professionally, even on subjects you would rather not talk about.

Terrifying Four: Unrealistic Expectations in Job Adverts

We’ve all seen the adverts looking for new graduates with a minimum of 5 years’ experience! Or single adverts that seem to be looking for a multitude of roles to be filled by an individual. If you come across one you are interested in applying for, the first thing you should do is contact the recruitment agency, if there is one and ask them candidly about the requirements of the role. If it’s a company directly recruiting for themselves, why not reach out to their HR manager on LinkedIn and ask if you could talk more about the role? They may be able to give you a steer on what they are really looking for.

Frightening Five: The waiting

Once the interviews are finished, the waiting period can be intolerable, maybe even worse than being rejected on the spot! If you haven’t heard any feedback several working days after an interview, it’s completely fine to reach out and politely request feedback. At worst you’ll appear keen and on-the-ball, and you’ll get your answer either way.
