Working within a freelance niche doesn’t mean that you have to put yourself in one bucket for the rest of your freelancing career. That being said, it is one way to earn more money freelancing and many freelancers often find themselves going down the rabbit hole questioning “should you specialize in a niche?” on message boards, blog posts, social media, podcasts, and on panels.
If you decide that you need a new freelance niche to build clips in and grow your clout as a freelancer, why not start with one that is a high-paying freelance niche??
Repeatedly taking on more assignments within a freelance niche is one way I earn a higher hourly rate–by being a go-to writer in a particular niche for a client, by familiarizing myself with news and trends in that genre so it’s easier to pitch ideas, and by knowing the material when I’m given a topic so I can write faster. It seems easy but it took time to become all of those things.?
Here are five high-paying freelance writing niches of 2023. This blog I recently wrote will give you the full picture of the 10 best freelance writing niches of 2023 .
This freelance writing niche is focused on medical writing, which is more technical than health writing you might come across in a women’s health website or a lifestyle publication. Healthcare writing requires more understanding than say life sciences writing, it’s more focused on the ability to understand data and medicine. It might include working with peer-reviewed articles, new medical technologies and medical topics containing a lot of jargon. Although freelance writers can kick-start their healthcare freelance writing careers without a degree or certification in this field, it can certainly help you stand apart from the crowd if you have medical training. Even a degree in biology or chemistry can give you an edge in this freelance niche. The more technical the writing you’re working on, the higher the pay you should ultimately receive.
2. SaaS
Software as a service is a software-delivery method that lets end users access and use applications remotely. Similar to medical writing, this form of writing tends to be technical in nature and writers are focused on a company’s software, digital products, and how to educate potential clients about them through their writing. That being said, many SaaS companies you know—Asana, Slack, DropBox, GoDaddy, Oracle, SalesForce—have blogs and newsletters that need content that speaks to a B2C audience. These software companies are backed by investors so there is a growing demand for these products, which makes it a high-paying niche. This market is expected to grow to $883 billion by 2029 . There is a lot of potential for freelance writers and freelance coders, developers, or designers in this fast-growing niche.

3. Cybersecurity
For those with knowledge in cybersecurity, this is another niche area that is high-paying for freelancers. Unfortunately, data breaches and cyber threats are here to stay and companies are always looking to protect themselves by investing in this area of their business. That means that cybersecurity companies (a type of SaaS) usually have money for freelancers. Cybersecurity solutions and services are a great freelance writing niche to explore if you know about cybersecurity and are able to communicate this information in a way that’s easily digestible.
4. Technology
This profitable freelance niche isn’t a surprising one on a list of freelance niches that pay well. In spite of recent layoffs by large tech companies, there are plenty of technology topics to write about and companies with deep pockets to fund freelancers’ work. If you’re looking to tech startups in order to find freelance work, check out a site like Wellfound to learn more about a company’s founders and their funding. There has also been an increase of freelancers in tech since the pandemic–perhaps because many professionals in this industry have been running side hustles for years.
5. Finance
Lastly, another highly profitable area for freelance writing is finance. Freelance writers are needed for this industry, whether that’s creating content for a bank’s website, writing articles for a finance company’s blog, doing thought leadership writing for executives, or helping out with white papers and case studies. If you have a background in this area or this is a topic you’re passionate about, finance freelance writing and personal finance freelancing might be one of the top niches of 2023 that you try to break into.
