5 Healthy Easter Tips That Might Surprise You

5 Healthy Easter Tips That Might Surprise You

So, Easter must not be very fun in your house with all that healthy eating - what do your kids think about no chocolate?

I get comments like this a lot. As a nutritionist, there are a lot of assumptions people make about my food choices and what I feed my kids.?

What statements like this tell me is the degree to which diet culture has invaded what we think it means to be healthy, eat well, and enjoy traditions.

It generally surprises the people who ask these questions to hear what my children do get in their Easter baskets.

Chocolate. Eggs, bunnies, bars.?

But it must be at least sugar-free organic 90% cocoa, right?

Not if I want my kids to eat it!?

The specific chocolate my kids get in their Easter baskets is whatever is left on the Thursday before Easter when I realize the shops will be closed the following day. If I want chocolate before Easter Bunny go time, we need to get some STAT. And, it's on sale then too.?

In our family, the Easter Bunny comes once a year. And once a year, my kids wake the neighbours up at 6:00 AM, running around the yard like maniacs searching for where 'that crazy Easter Bunny' hid things this year. The more creative and challenging to get the location, the more they love it.?

If you're facing any judgments or unsolicited opinions?about what you 'should' be giving your kids over the Easter weekend, here?are a few things to consider.

5 Healthy Easter Tips

?? What kids eat daily is more important than what they eat on ONE day. That's how nutrition work. Our daily food habits play a much more significant role in our overall health and well-being than one day of chocolate.?

?? Having an occasional free-for-all with chocolate and sweets gives kids the opportunity to learn self-control with those foods. Complete restriction or parental portion control does not teach those skills.?

?? Healthy eating is about more than just nutrients. It's about joy, family rituals, and shared experiences. Watching my 5-year-old daughter dressed as a bunny scaling the gate because she was too excited to open it was hilarious. It was priceless to watch the kids pull out their best teamwork to get the eggs in precarious positions.??

?? Regardless of the reason or holiday, you don't have to listen to the food police. What you choose to eat or eat, decide to feed your kids, is no one else's business. We all know that context matters, and it's never acceptable to judge other people's food choices.?

?? Easter is a religious holiday and not practiced by everyone. You do not have to celebrate it in any way. That includes a visit from the Easter Bunny. Not all decisions are about nutrition.?

This argument goes both ways. If you choose to use different options than the typical chocolate and sweets at Easter, that's fine. Refer to the point above about never being acceptable to judge other people's food choices.?

Have a lovely long weekend for all of you out there celebrating, not celebrating, or just waiting for the Easter Bunny.?

Honestly Kristine Peter ANutr, MEd, my favourite is a milk chocolate Lindt & Sprüngli bunny ?? Though this year, I got a large Maltesers chocolate egg for my kids and me... as my 5 year old loves sharing maltesers with me for our special "party nights" together ??????
