5 Habits That are Destroying Your Art Career

For me, social media has become a large, telling window into the lives of many artists from around the world. For nearly a decade, I've silently observed the rise and fall of many talented and not so talented artists - they either damned their career by getting too personal or faded into obscurity after their 15 minutes ended. Some rode on the coattails of their more impressive peers while others made a boom with something clever or witty but failed to progress. After watching so many promising careers fizzle out due to some sophomoric mistakes, I feel compelled to make a list to prevent further career suicides. Read more >

What is the problem we are addressing here? I would think it is, how on earth is an artist supposed to make a living without becoming a professor? While covering the basics, this article lets us know there is still much more to learn that isn’t explored here. A variety of sources are available to would be professional artists, the best of which is apprenticeship to someone who’s doing well. Remember that your mission while being one is not technique, but to learn how bigger works are sold. That is something the artist won’t necessarily tell you. It’s your job to find out, quietly. There are other resources available but no room to describe them here.

Your suggestions to be aware of — career suicide is not coming up and gee I want to know what they are. Procrastinating? .....?

This is very good advice. Thanks for compiling a list that will keep me focused on a balanced artistic career.

Very true and well written! Thank you Eric! I came across many examples to match each pattern you described and on occasion was a match myself.

It was nice Advice. Though I began as a traditional artist, I'm actually a digital artist with a focus on Animation, but the advice is very much appreciated. It helps with building a portfolio.
