Over the last decade, I have interviewed thousands of candidates that have varying backgrounds, skill sets, and unique talents. What I've uncovered is that compensation is NOT the most important factor in choosing a company or their next role! I know - it's SHOCKING but think about it: you could have a strong six-figure compensation package but if you are always worried that the company may close their doors tomorrow, how would you really feel?
Through personal research and experience, a majority of legitimate and reputable organizations have a fair compensation package and benefits - in fact, it's EXPECTED! However, even those these two things may attract talent, they won't KEEP talent around! Below is what I have found to be the 5 factors that are critical to have for your next role:
Development and Training: The organization should have skill development and training that is structured out. This is designed to help you become more successful at your role. Outside of "new-hire training," there should be continuous investment and training as you progress through your career that helps prepare you for cross-departmental functions and career mobility. No one wants to be stagnant in their role forever!
Upward Mobility: As your skill sets increase and you take on more responsibilities and projects, there needs to be opportunities for continuous development! Does that mean it has to be a linear "corporate ladder"? NO - smart organizations today have created a "jungle gym" that offer employees the opportunity to take on lateral and upward promotions thereby increasing their skills sets in a different capacity! It should be stated that promotions should be earned and not arbitrarily given as then promotions lose value as a result!
Challenging Work: Is the work challenging? Even though we as human beings like when success and results come easily...eventually WE WILL GET BORED! The work itself must be challenging and push us to become better. This is tied directly to the role at hand and also to how you are being led as mastery of every facet of each role is easier said than done!
Stability and Growth: When you review dozens of resumes a week, you see some common trends. One of the common and scary trends is someone that has had multiple jobs within the last 5 years AND it was due to companies shutting down or being sold off. Having faith that the organization is financially stable with a strong cash flow is critical for your future! In addition to that, you also want confidence that the company is continuing to grow with a great vision for innovation into new products, services, markets, verticals, etc! The easiest way to gauge this is look at the company's track record and trends of top and bottom line as past behaviors are usually a good indicator of future performance!
Culture: THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE! Even if you have great compensation, benefits, training/development, upward mobility, challenging work, stability, and growth, BUT if the culture is incredibly TOXIC, you will not want to work there! Ultimately, organizations are made up of human beings - what are the values of the organization? What is the mission? How do they hire? Who are their leaders? The culture that is created ultimately determines where the company goes in the future and impacts every other factor! Without a strong company culture and values, a company is destined to fail! You want to ensure the culture aligns with YOUR VALUES!
There you have it - 5 factors that are more important than compensation! These are exactly the criteria you want to keep in mind and also what you want to deep dive into as you pursue your next role! If you are looking for an organization that already has all these things including:
- World class training and development!
- Upward mobility!
- Challenging but rewarding work!
- 40 years of consecutive growth and stability going back to our roots during The Great Depression!
