5 Essentials of a Great Redesign Pitch

Everyone is looking for ways to redesign their teams, products or processes. I recently ran a day-long Leadership Development Program with my colleague Amir Ghaferi. In his role as the Chief Clinical Officer of our physician group, he oversees a multi-billion dollar budget and is constantly being pitched to invest in new care delivery models.
Alongside my lessons learned as the Chief Medical Officer within one of the world's largest design firms, we combined our c-suite perspectives to create the 5 essentials of a great redesign pitch:
Problem - Can you clearly define the problem? For meaningful problems within complex organizations, the problem can be a moving target. Do you have a plan to make sure you're consistently targeting the actual problem?
Partners - Every great redesign will need a robust team that often pulls across many divisions and disciplines. Just as important, you will need to identify who your strongest critics will be. Can find a way to align them in your process?
Resources - Most people are quick to jump to a number, but do not spend enough thinking through what they actually need. It is people? Access to data? Protected Time? Being candid about specific needs is far more effective than negotiating an amount of money.

Evaluation - At some point, we will want to know if your redesign worked! Up front, you should have some clear, measurable outcomes that you track over time. In addition to your intended outcomes, do you have safeguards in place to monitor for unintended consequences?
Urgency - Starting a new project is easy, but the hardest work often comes toward the end. How will you maintain a sense of urgency to keep pace through the finish line? Will you have interval incentives? Bring on fresh team members? The initial excitement of a new project will wear off and you will need a plan to keep your progress.
We hope this framework helps you as you think through your own redesign pitch. Image above is free to share with your teams and organizations.
