#5. Encouraging a Positive Work Culture as a Leader in challenging times

Post Covid, most of the work force in corporate is going through many different challenges and a mindset which is stressed in different way. For past year layoffs is a trending news, several corporates announcing layoffs which is adding to stress not only for working level work force rather managers and leaders are in a different level of mounting pressure.?

How do we deal with such environment and thrive when things are challenging?and specially what different role you can play as a leader to make work environment positive and better in challenging situation.

As employees return to work in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the effects of layoffs and increased pressure can cast a shadow on the workforce's mindset. However, leaders have a unique opportunity to create a positive work culture that uplifts and supports employees during these challenging times. By implementing key strategies and demonstrating empathetic leadership, leaders can make a significant difference in shaping a positive work environment.

In times of uncertainty, transparent communication becomes paramount. Leaders should address employees' concerns about changes within the organization. By providing regular updates and explanations, leaders can foster trust and alleviate anxiety, helping employees navigate the changes with a greater sense of security.

Empathy and support are crucial in creating a positive work culture. Employees may experience heightened stress and anxiety during periods of layoffs. Leaders can demonstrate empathy by actively listening to employees' concerns, providing emotional support, and creating a safe space for open conversations. Offering resources or counselling services can further assist employees in coping with the challenges they face.

It's not layoff which brings stress but?the environment of uncertainty and anxiety?created around the economic world in various ways which makes it more stressful for not only workforce leaving but also for work force staying in the organisation.?

A while back I wrote my thoughts on the subject, where I penned down as how companies confuse this terminology of IWP which is in corporate culture nothing but inspiring work place.?How it is understood by many organisations and Leaders is that good colourful walls, written with lot of quotes, beautiful tables, comfortable chairs, coffee machines around and likewise facilities generally make the work place inspiring. Somehow I couldn’t see that inspiration there in those fancy furniture and gadgets!

The inspiration doesn’t come from materialistic things but it comes with Powerful human interactions.?Every human interaction in organisations can be inspiring or uninspiring.?There are hundreds of human touch points in the organisation and how people are interacting with each other will define that are they inspiring each other or demotivating. I have worked with many of the bosses during my long corporate journey and my observation is that some of the bosses will not even wish you good day if they don’t need anything from you. They will cross you as if they don't even know you. What makes us believe that such leaders seating in glass cabins with least human engagement can inspire teams to deliver at high performance with fancy furniture around.??I believed differently, that if we make every human experience positive and full of love and compassion the people will feel valued and engaged. The inspiration can flow from one human to another human, its human thing. It is a culture of human being.?

As a leader, one of the most important roles you have is to encourage a positive work culture and celebrate successes. Not only does this boost morale and productivity, but it also creates a sense of community and purpose within the workplace. Here are some examples from recent past to illustrate the power of a positive work culture and celebrating successes:

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, many companies were forced to shift to remote work. However, some companies, like Shopify, took the opportunity to create a positive work culture for their employees. They introduced virtual coffee breaks, fitness challenges, and even virtual escape rooms to keep employees engaged and connected. By taking the time to create a positive work culture, Shopify not only maintained productivity but also kept their employees happy and motivated.

Another company that has prioritized a positive work culture is Zappos. They have a dedicated team called the "Fun Committee" that plans events and activities to celebrate successes and promote team bonding. From scavenger hunts to costume contests, Zappos understands the importance of taking a break from work and having some fun. By doing so, they create a sense of community and promote a positive work-life balance.

Even in the world of sports, creating a positive work culture and celebrating successes is important. Take the Milwaukee Bucks, for example. In 2021, they won the NBA championship, and while the players and coaches were certainly celebrated, the team's owners also made sure to include all employees in the festivities. They held a championship parade for everyone, from the front office staff to the janitorial team. By recognizing the hard work of everyone involved, the Milwaukee Bucks created a positive work culture and a sense of shared success.

In each of these examples, the leaders of these companies and teams recognized the importance of a positive work culture and celebrating successes. They understood that their?employees and team members are their most valuable asset?and that by creating a positive work environment, they could achieve even greater success.

In current challenging environment with different type of stress, it needs different type of support system?which make work force to stay connected and feel contributed for organisation’s larger goals.?

So, as a leader, how can you encourage a positive work culture and celebrate successes within your own organization? Start by recognizing the hard work and achievements of your team members. Show your appreciation and provide opportunities for team bonding and fun. By doing so,?you'll not only create a positive work culture but also foster a sense of community and purpose?within your workplace.

Prioritizing employee well-being is essential?for creating a positive work culture. Leaders can promote physical and mental health by implementing wellness programs, granting access to mental health resources, and encouraging work-life balance. By nurturing the holistic well-being of employees, leaders help create a supportive environment that values and cares for its workforce.

Investing in the growth and development of employees is a powerful way to instill positivity?and enhance job security. Leaders can offer training programs, mentorship and coaching opportunities, and resources for upskilling or reskilling. By encouraging continuous learning, leaders empower employees to acquire new skills, boost their confidence, and adapt to changing circumstances.

Recognizing and celebrating individual and team accomplishments?is crucial for maintaining morale and motivation. Leaders should regularly acknowledge employees' contributions, highlighting their successes regardless of the circumstances. Celebrations and positive reinforcement create a sense of achievement and reinforce the value employees bring to the organization.

Encouraging collaboration and teamwork is essential for building a positive work culture. Leaders can facilitate cross-functional projects, provide platforms for knowledge-sharing, and recognize collaborative efforts. By promoting unity and a shared sense of purpose, leaders foster an environment that supports and uplifts employees.

Leaders play a pivotal role in setting the tone for the work culture.?By exemplifying the values and behaviors they want to see in their teams, leaders inspire others?to adopt a positive attitude. Demonstrating resilience, adaptability, and proactive problem-solving showcases effective leadership, encouraging employees to remain positive and engaged.

Inclusive work environments foster positivity and harness the power of diverse perspectives.?Leaders should emphasize the importance of inclusivity and diversity, creating an environment where all employees feel valued and respected. Encouraging open dialogue and providing opportunities for different viewpoints to be heard enriches the work culture and enhances collaboration.

Leaders should create avenues for employees to provide feedback and suggestions.?Actively listening to employee concerns, ideas, and insights not only makes them feel heard?but also encourages their ownership of the organization's success. Employees who are actively involved in decision-making processes are more likely to feel motivated and engaged.

Maintaining regular communication and fostering connections is essential, particularly in remote or hybrid work environments. Leaders may experiment to organize virtual team-building activities, hold regular town hall meetings, or facilitate informal gatherings. These interactions help to nurture a sense of community, boost morale, and maintain a strong sense of belonging.

Despite the challenges posed by post-COVID changes in the corporate world,?leaders can create a positive work culture by employing transparent communication, empathy, and support. By prioritizing employee well-being, fostering collaboration, and leading by example, leaders can navigate these uncertain times and create an environment that encourages productivity, engagement, and positivity among employees.

The inspiring work place can be created in any kind of circumstances. Some people feel that if everything is going good and situations are favourable then in that good going situation only we can create a good work place. Rather it is reverse way, when things are not going good and situations are tough and things are not going well, you need more and more inspiration to draw positive energy and delivery on tough demanding conditions.

People come to workplace to work. They do not have any other intention. But will they work at their fullest potential and will be able to delivery extra ordinary results? That all depends on as what kind of energy that place produces. This reminds me the?article of Prof Sumantra Ghosh titled "The smell of Place"?. If the ora of that place produces positive energy and inspirations, the ordinary people can produce extra ordinary results at the same place. The energy and inspiration is produced by human being on that work place. every person who is in influence of the situation, if start producing the right energy and inspiration the whole place will become inspiring. That’s how the inspiring work places are always created with lot of positive energy and creating experiences at each and every human touch points in the organisation.

Embrace the magic of levity, celebrate achievements with heartfelt intent, and witness the transformation as your team flourishes and finds true fulfilment on the path to greatness.

Finally, before I conclude this article, here is my favourite section which is 3*3 matrix on creating inspiring work culture as a Leader:

1.??Three wise Quotes:?

  • "A positive work culture is not a luxury; it's a necessity for long-term success and employee satisfaction." - Arianna Huffington
  • "Success is best when it's shared. As a leader, make it a priority to celebrate the accomplishments of your team, and watch the positive work culture thrive." - Simon Sinek
  • "Culture is the foundation of everything we do. To foster a positive work environment, you must lead by example and celebrate the achievements of your team." - Richard Branson

2. Three Question for you to ponder as a leader:?

  • How can I encourage a sense of belonging and inclusivity within the workplace to create a positive work culture?
  • How can I effectively communicate the organization's values and goals to inspire and align team members towards a shared purpose?
  • How can I encourage and support professional growth and development opportunities for my team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning?

3. Three Clues:?

  • Show genuine empathy and understanding towards employees' concerns and anxieties. Be approachable, listen actively, and demonstrate that you genuinely care about their well-being
  • Encourage open and transparent communication channels where employees feel comfortable expressing their thoughts, ideas, and concerns. Create a culture that values open dialogue and feedback
  • Support the growth and development of your employees. Provide training opportunities, mentorship/coaching programs, and resources to enhance their skills and knowledge. Show that you value their professional growth.

Wish you all a happy weekend leaders and readers !

So true. Reminds me of the weekly Monday stand-ups of my team, an open forum where people shared everything under the Sun - fun, what’s going well, not well, weekend jokes. It helped fight lots of inherent anxiety and the week started on a Positive note. Seating once a week wirh the teams, converting my ‘office’ on to a meeting room when I am not around (attending long meetings elsewhere !) created a very open culture. Lastly, daily 10 minutes huddle with leadership team created an open space to agree to disagree. Everything was open for discussions, but meeting needs to end in 10 minutes !!
