5 Early Divorce Mistakes You Shouldn’t Make

Avoiding Early Divorce Mistakes

The early stages of divorce can be bewildering for many people. Some are still in shock from learning their spouses wanted a divorce. Some are completely overwhelmed by the amount of information and work needed to divorce. And some may just want to reverse time and go back to when the biggest problem in their life wasn’t dividing up a life made together. It is easy to make early divorce mistakes during this time. And, unfortunately, a few mistakes made early on in your divorce can set the entire process on a negative trajectory. Here are a few common early divorce mistakes and how you can avoid making them.

  1. Choosing how to divorce before talking to your spouse. Do some research then talk with your spouse about what option is best for both of you. Running to court may seem like a safe bet, but unless your spouse is cooperative, it can end up costing you dearly.

  1. Making everything about you. You may still be in a lot of psychological pain and suffering. Obsessing over what went wrong will rob you of your energy. Divorce is really about figuring out how to divide your lives in a way that is fair to both of you and is in the best interests of your child. It isn’t about how your spouse wronged you or who was at fault.

  1. Forgetting about the kids. Divorce will turn your life upside down, but it could affect your kids even more. Let your child’s well-being guide your decision-making from the very beginning. This should be your motivation to keep it civil and work together for the benefit of your child.

  1. Retaining an attorney before you’ve heard your spouse speak. Just because you are getting a divorce doesn’t mean you have to hire an attorney to do all the communicating for you. Attorneys have the tendency to discourage lines of communication between the spouses. They do this to help your case, but it comes at a cost.

  1. Agreeing to everything too soon. Many people want to get their divorce over with as soon as possible. These people typically understand that the real healing and moving on takes place after the divorce is finalized. It’s great to want to move on, but take the time to learn your rights and perhaps consult with a mediator about your options.

Whatever you do, make sure you get some professional guidance before you sign anything or make any important decisions pertaining to your divorce. Consult with a divorce mediator if you want guidance and information about the Massachusetts divorce process and want to avoid making these early divorce mistakes.
