5 Dysfunctions of a team
5 dysfunctions of a team, is a concept coined by Patrick Lencioni in his book "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team." These dysfunctions are essential to understand, as they can greatly impact team productivity and success.
1. Absence of Trust
The foundation of any successful team is trust. Without trust, team members are less likely to share ideas, admit mistakes, and ask for help. When trust is absent, team members waste time and energy on self-protection and second-guessing, which slows down progress.
2. Fear of Conflict
Conflict is inevitable in any team, but it can be healthy if managed constructively. Unfortunately, many teams avoid conflict altogether, which can lead to unresolved issues and resentments. Fear of conflict can be a result of the absence of trust, and without it, team members may shy away from constructive debate, leading to decisions that are not fully explored or vetted.
3. Lack of Commitment
Without trust or healthy conflict, team members may lack commitment to the team's goals or decisions. Without commitment, team members may undermine decisions, miss deadlines, or not prioritize the team's objectives. It's essential for team members to feel invested in the team's success and feel comfortable committing to decisions.
4. Avoidance of Accountability
Teams that lack commitment may also avoid accountability. Team members need to hold each other accountable for their actions and decisions, and this can only happen if trust and commitment are present. Avoiding accountability can lead to missed deadlines, poor quality work, and ultimately, team failure.
5. Inattention to Results
Finally, a team that lacks trust, healthy conflict, commitment, and accountability is unlikely to focus on results. Teams that prioritise personal agendas or individual recognition over the team's goals are less likely to achieve success.
To overcome these dysfunctions, teams need to focus on building trust, encouraging healthy conflict, ensuring commitment, promoting accountability, and focusing on results. As leaders, we need to create a culture where these behaviours are encouraged and modelled, so our teams can thrive.
You have 2 choices. If you are someone who finds it difficult to inspire teams and are getting overlooked for promotions you can have try and learn on your own whilst wasting a lot of time. Or it’s time to get yourself a strategic professional CXO coach. Some who has been a CXO in real life and is certified globally (ICF-PCC).
