The 5 Dysfunctions my Team Has Overcome
This post is influenced by Patrick Lencioni’s 5 Dysfunctions of a Team. I really enjoy Lencioni’s works because he does an incredible job of breaking down highly complex topics such as teamwork and vulnerability. Through his storytelling ability, he is able to craft these fables that highlight each of his points in a seamless yet impactful way. 5 Dysfunctions of a Team follows the dysfunctional executive team of a tech startup in Half Moon Bay and their transformation from a low-performing team to one that is objectively high-performance. Typically, I would come away from a book like this with several ideas to instill within my team. However, as the story unfolded and each of the dysfunctions was laid out, I couldn’t help but think to myself that my team contradicts each of these things dysfunctions. While I highly recommend reading the book, here are the 5 dysfunctions.
As a technology professional in the early stages of my career, I’ve only been a member of a few teams and each of them fell on a different point on the performance spectrum. Truthfully, I would like to take the time to commend my current PMO team on their ability to dispel all of these dysfunctions regardless of the circumstance. Whether it is thoughtful disagreement on a new process or a friendly reminder to complete that task you've been pushing off, it has been a tremendous experience to work alongside such a high-functioning team.
