If you can answer "yes" to any of these questions what you have is probably a goal, or a plan, or a collection of goals and plans, or in the worst case clichés and truisms.

In the Arkaro Insights podcast series, we help business-to-business executives deliver better results in their organizations.?In each episode we introduce you to one of Arkaro's thought partners to bring you the latest ideas for change and innovation in your organization.

In the latest episode we talk to Peter Compo author of?The?Emergent Approach?to Strategy: Adaptive Design and Execution about the 5 Disqualifiers of Strategy;

  1. Is the opposite of the statement absurd?
  2. Does the statement include numbers?
  3. Is the statement a duplicate of the parent organization?
  4. Does the statement exclude anything or anyone in the organization?
  5. Is the statement a list?

With a doctorate in Chemical Engineering from the City College of New York, and also a musical background, Peter Compo spent twenty-five years at E. I. DuPont in a wide range of leadership positions including product, marketing, supply chain, and business management, and he was the corporate lead for integrated business planning. Thanks Peter for sharing these Disqualifiers. Simple but very powerful. I have now used them several times since I first learned them at DuPont from you! One key benefit I appreciated is that they tend to foster engagement and critical discussions across functions. The result is that alignment is easier to reach, strategy is better understood and the execution of the strategy itself typically happens faster.

The disqualifiers are great for identifying 'bad strategy' (or rather 'no strategy at all', in Peter's words). I found it useful to hear how no.2 helps find weaknesses not picked up by no.1. And also Peter's explanation of no.3. That each business unit should have its own 'free choice' strategy that busts the bottleneck in *their* area while satisfying the constraint imposed by the strategy above them. Great episode! Looking forward to the next episode where you promise to talk about identifying the bottlenecks.
