The 5 Deadly Sins

The 5 Deadly Sins

Good morning,

Here's something to think about as you step into your weekend.

What is your current real rate of learning?

I emphasize real because there's a crucial difference between the illusion of learning and genuine transformation.

This matters because when engaged in pseudo-learning (read: scrolling social media all day) we feel like we're upgrading our mental models and expanding our knowledge frameworks, but nothing truly transformative is happening beneath the surface.

And here's the thing. Learning drives growth. Growth ensures relevance.

Therefore, getting this right, is important.

Here are the five deadly learning sins of learning:

  1. Mistaking consumption for learning. More time on TikTok or LinkedIn doesn't equal more learning – it's mostly just sophisticated distraction.
  2. Sacrificing quality for volume. Ten books that change how you think will transform your life more than 100 books you barely remember.
  3. Not dedicating time to learning. Hoping learning will happen during your packed workday isn't a strategy. Real learning demands intentional space.
  4. Avoiding reflection. Without processing and connecting ideas, you're building knowledge on sand. Each new concept needs time to integrate.
  5. Focusing only on familiar ideas. Echo chambers feel good but stunt growth. Real transformation happens when your beliefs meet their challengers.

Your real rate of learning determines your relevance in the world.

Btw, happy Valentines!

Erik

Familiar thoughts can be so debilitating. Like you and John Sanei say on the pod, we have 60,000 thoughts a day and 90% are the same as yesterday!
