#5 DDD: How to help Rio Grande do Sul (RS) in Brazil

The fifth edition of DDD will be different. It could not go any other way since my country, Brazil, is all hands-on-deck to help the victims of theflooding and disaster happening in the south of the country. Today's edition is focused on explaining a little bit more about what is happening and how you, from every part of the world, can help!

What is Happening in the South of Brazil?

Brazil is grappling with one of its worst floods in recent history. Torrential rains have drenched the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, home to 11 million people, since late April and have triggered severe flooding that has submerged entire towns, blocked roads, broken a major dam and shut down the international airport until June.

The floods, which have stretched across most of Rio Grande do Sul’s 497 municipalities, have forced nearly 164,000 people from their homes. Some 1,476,000 people have been affected, according to the civil defense, with at least 754 people left injured. At least 134 people are still missing and 105 confirmed to be dead.

In the state capital, Porto Alegre, a city of 1.3 million perched on the banks of the Guaiba River, streets were submerged in murky water and the airport was shuttered by the deluge, with flights canceled through the end of the month.

Unfortunately it doesn't stop there...

From Friday to Sunday, intense rainfall is expected to hit again between the east and center-north of Rio Grande do Sul, with some areas expecting 100 mm (nearly 4 inches), and temperatures will plummet, possibly reaching 0o.

The state and cities affected won't recover without help. Even if the rain stoped (which is not the case), some parts could be under water at least until the end of the month. According to the state government, 19 billion Brazilians reals ($3.7 billion US dollars) will be needed for rebuilding.

People lost everything and are in intense need of basic supplies:

  • Clean pure water to drink
  • Non-perishable food
  • Medications
  • Warm clothes
  • Basic hygiene items (toiletries)

Caramel, the horse's name, became a symbol of hope during these days.
YOU can help people that were affected!
