The 5-D Framework for Career Change | Clara Chorley

Happy Thanksgiving, Career Warriors!

?? By this point, you've probably indulged in too many yams, embraced a power nap, and are now expertly thumb-scrolling through your iPhone, desperately seeking something quasi-productive beyond the Black Friday deals.

So today's newsletter is for all you brave souls out there contemplating a career change.

I recently had an insightful conversation on the Let's Eat, Grandma Career Warrior Podcast with the incredible Clara Chorley that I'm excited to share.

Career Change: The Difficult Reality

Career change is hard enough.

And to make matters worse, our minds may be swirling with anxious thoughts and questions that echo constantly in our frontal lobes:

  • How can I identify my ideal career path during a career change?
  • What strategies can help me overcome self-doubt and fear during a career transition?
  • Am I told old to make a change?

In the latest episode, we delved into the Five D Framework for navigating career change with Clara Chorley. Clara is a highly impactful Career Strategist, TEDx presenter, and the creator of the Five D Framework.

She's spoken a lot about career change in her years as a career coach, and she's an excellent source if you're struggling with how to execute such a change.

Here's a really well put video that gets into the inner psychology of a career change. Clara describes how we get stuck in an infinity loop that works against us.

Clara's 5-D Framework

Let's break down the Five Ds briefly:

1. Dream: Start by exploring your aspirations, building a legacy, and defining what fulfillment means to you. Give yourself the creative freedom and time to dream without limitations.

2. Dare: Take that bold step onto the bridge between your current situation and your dream career. Embrace the internal and emotional shift required to let go of the old and welcome the new.

3. Dive: Initiate the tactical moves. Network, update your resume, and navigate the job search waters. Dive into the deep, often messy, but necessary stage of exploring opportunities and facing rejection.

4. Decide: Make choices based on due diligence and self-trust. Choose the job that aligns with your core needs and wants. It's about being strategic and confident in your decision-making.

5. Design: Plan the first 90 days of your new job. Identify key stakeholders, processes, and resources. Design your approach to balance work and self-care, setting the stage for a successful journey in your new role.

The key takeaway? It's not a linear process. Each step is a crucial part of the journey, and progress happens one step at a time.

Remember, your career change is a journey, not a race. Do not think that you need to figure it all out next month.

Take it one "D" at a time, and celebrate each milestone along the way. If you have questions or want to share your journey, please comment or message me—I'd love to hear from you!

Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving and a successful career change journey!
