5 CV Mistakes Stopping You From Getting Interviews

5 CV Mistakes Stopping You From Getting Interviews

I'm sure you are constantly spending hours on your CV. You are sending it to friends, begging your significant other to review it one more time, and even asking your mentor to give it a quick glance. You feel like you’re doing everything right.

Except there’s one problem... you’re not getting any interviews, at least not for the roles you truly want, and the automated rejection emails keep rolling into your inbox. You are frustrated because you are applying all the time, and you know you are qualified for the roles you want, but you can’t understand why no one else seems to see that.

Well, here’s a fun fact: according to a new study conducted by Ladders, Inc., hiring managers and recruiters only spend 7.4 seconds reading your CV.

And, if your CV isn’t resulting in interviews offers, you’re probably making one of these 5 CV mistakes:

You are not 100% sure what career you want to pursue

And, it shows. Your CV is not going to convince hiring managers if you haven’t first convinced yourself that you want this job. The first step to getting a position you will love is not preparing your CV and sending it off as quickly as possible to every open position, hoping something will stick. The first step to getting a position you will love is getting clear on what position you will love.

Getting very clear on what you want to do is essential for a successful job search.

Your CV focuses on the wrong results

You have probably heard many times that your CV should be results-oriented and results-driven. But, what if your CV emphasises accomplishments and results you have achieved during your various work experiences but doesn’t convey what you can do for the company you are applying and why those accomplishments should matter to them?!

This is especially true for candidates who want to pivot into a new career or industry. The last thing you want is for the recruiter to take one look at your CV and think, “She sounds amazing, but not a good fit for this.”

It’s important to remember that turning all your previous experience into results won’t get you the job you want, but turning your previous experience into results that show the hiring manager what you can do for them helps you win a job interview.

You are using the same CV to apply to different jobs

It’s your job to show hiring managers that you can solve their problems. But you can’t show hiring managers you understand and can solve their specific needs if you are using the same CV every time you send your application.

I want to warn you, just copying and pasting keywords and using the company’s language without a proof you have experience in this particular field and showing how it will help to add value to their organisation isn’t the answer either. So stop filling your CV with keywords and start showing hiring managers that you are the solution they need.

Your CV is full of meaningless clichés

What do I mean by “meaningless clichés”? Here is an example: “Ambitions and motivated recent graduate with a strong work ethic and ability to work in a team which helps me consistently achieve my goals and build my skill-set.” It may sound fancy but what does actually mean? Bulking out your CV with vague and overly complex descriptions like this will just confuse and annoy employers.

You should always concentrate on explaining exactly what have you achieved in your previous job/work experience and how it has benefited the organisation. This way you will show the positive impact that can be made by hiring you.

Your CV layout is distracting

When it comes to your CV, it has to be visually appealing. If your CV is tough on the eyes and hard to skim, you are distracting hiring managers from your value. So, instead of wondering if it can be more than one page, which colours you should use or if you can get away with a particular font, you should always ask yourself, “Am I conveying the right message and making it easy for recruiters to focus on my value?”

Unless you are in fashion, graphic design or another undeniable creative industry, keep your CV simple, concise, clear and easy to read, with lots of white space.

Having a strong and powerful CV is a must (I know you would love to but you can’t get a job without having a compelling CV and cover letter) but CV writing can be extremely hard as it requires a great deal of self-reflection and talking about yourself in a way that is objective yet attractive to future employers.
