These metrics help determine the effectiveness of your knowledge management strategy.
Understanding the importance of each metric and how to improve them can help your company achieve its goals.
Information quality
The importance of information quality as a critical knowledge management metric is not in doubt. Information quality is a fundamental factor that drives business decisions, and a failure to understand and improve the quality of this information can cost you money. For example, inaccurate pricing information can lead to under-pricing, a situation that would reduce the margins of each product sold. Another result of inaccurate information is a "lost customer," which can also be a financial loss.
Besides a knowledge management tool, you should also monitor your employees' activities. Using activity metrics, you can measure your team's performance and individual performance. Another way to monitor individual and team performance is by using quality metrics. These metrics also help to understand the success and failure of individual KM processes, and they guide you to the next steps.
Time to publish
One of the most important knowledge management metrics is the time taken for articles to be published. It is an important indicator of the quality of articles. If published articles are not regularly updated, this metric will indicate that they are not of high quality. A well-established knowledge sharing culture will result in improved article quality. Developing a feedback mechanism for your articles will help you identify recurring issues and devise permanent solutions.
Metrics that should be considered include time (increased or decreased), resources, software/system limitations, and lack of content. Another important metric is the impact of applying the learned lesson. This can include the number of problem/issues solved by applying the lesson learned.

Link quality
Link quality is a critical aspect of knowledge management. Link quality depends on a number of factors including the frequency and quality of links to your knowledge base. In addition to link quality, you should also consider activity metrics to monitor the effectiveness of your knowledge management initiatives. For example, you can monitor the number of knowledge articles shared by different employees over a period of time.
Usability
When determining the effectiveness of a system, usability metrics play a major role. These metrics can help you understand how well a system is used by different types of users. These metrics can be used to measure a wide range of factors, including satisfaction, effectiveness, and efficiency. They are based on rigorous research and have stood the test of time.
Using these metrics can help managers monitor the progress of the design process and make decisions on when to release products. However, they are expensive, and most companies underinvest in usability studies. Qualitative methods provide a much better return on investment.
Time to answer questions
Knowledge management metrics should be used to measure the performance of your knowledge management system. These metrics help ensure that your knowledge does not get lost when your employees leave the company. Time to answer questions is one of the most important metrics in knowledge management. It's also a good indicator of whether or not your knowledge base is outdated.
Ideally, your knowledge base should provide solutions to your users' questions, so it's important to track their satisfaction level. This will help you improve the structure of the knowledge base, and it can also be compared to the number of people who used a single article. It also shows the popularity of the knowledge base.

2 年Sorry, but these metrics belong to the KPI category of ?beneficial propositions? or ?indirect weak impact?. As discussed in the recent KMGN clinic they do not convince executives: https://www.skmf.net/en/events/roundtables/ Let's be more brave and have real impact in our organizations on money, time and core processes.

2 年Excellent points. One, to me at least, is important to cite is ethics: "ethical use of knowledge, information and data". I believe that ethical and legal use of knowledge is as important as other features put forward. There are many individuals and companies who hide or use/abuse the knowledge in a way to bring benefit (illegally) to them and to harm the others.

2 年Like you mentioned in your last sentences, it is important to use testimony to make visible success of Knowledge Management. It is always difficult to measure with KPI the usability especially. The other aspects are easier to measure.
