5 COPYWRITING MISTAKES TO AVOID

Whether you writing a caption on Linkedin, Instagram, Facebook, or an ad, you have to be familiar with writing copy.

Copywriting helps you connect with your targeted audience and impart the tone of your Brand.

As an entrepreneur, and particularly solopreneurs and small business owners, you can't always afford to outsource. At least, at the beginning of your business journey, I strongly advise my clients to familiarize themselves with different aspects of running the business.

Copywriting is an essential skill of any marketer or entrepreneur. Your ability to write good copy can make or break your business. When used correctly, it can increase your conversions and bring you massive revenue. However, if you commit these common mistakes, you will sabotage your business.

Here are 5 mistakes you should avoid.

1-Not addressing your audience. Remember, the person reading your copy is a human being. Hence, treat your audience with respect and talk to them as though you would be talking to a friend on the phone. In your copy, always ensure that it is like you are speaking one on one. If you are writing through private messages, always start your message with a “Hi NAME” or a simple greeting to let them know that there is a human connection.

2-Selling too hard, too quickly. How would you like it if you started your copy with “Don’t buy this and your ears will fall off!” Instead, try starting your copy by trying to relate to your audience’s problems and perhaps talk a little about yourself before going into the benefits of the product. Remember, in the long run, the soft sell always wins.

3-Screaming into their face. Talking about some crappy headlines, one that comes to mind is the headline with EVERY SINGLE LETTER IN CAPS. This is not just bold, it’s literally screaming in their face and nobody likes that. Instead, only use capitals for the first letter of each word.

4-Using long spammy looking affiliate links in your email copy. Nobody trusts weird-looking links, your best bet would be to use a link Cloaker or a link shortening service such as Tinyurl.com or bit.ly.

5-Talking like a robot. Nobody likes to listen to a machine. Instead, use a casual tone when dealing with your customers, it’s more human-like and a lot more relatable. It is always best to write how you talk. But always be polite and no use of crude words.

If you are starting out, I'll admit it can come across as daunting and overwhelming. But knowing how to use words correctly to convey your products, services, and message will serve a tremendous purpose.

So let's recap,

Always address your audience appropriately.

Don't sell too hard, too quickly. Your message will fall on deaf ears

Don't overuse caps letters in your headings, comes across as rude

Try using Link cloakers when sharing links in your ad copies, makes it more trustworthy

Use a casual and polite tone, it makes you relatable

These are but of course just the basics of copywriting, but it sure can get you well on your way to success.
