Keeping up with science is fundamental in order to better understand our body and learn how to get the most out of it.
A decade or so ago, we were led to believe that certain foods or nutritional habits would be detrimental to our health and wellness.
Some of those beliefs have been updated and this is what we now know.
1. Soy products lower testosterone – FALSE
A new meta-analysis that was published recently has debunked this theory. Just over 1700 men were used for this study and the conclusion was very clear. Soy products such as tofu does NOT lower testosterone levels in men.
2. Eating carbs after 6pm makes you fat – FALSE
Unlike humans, calories do not clock in and out of work. 50 calories from a slice of bread at 6am is no different from 50 calories of bread at 9pm. Eat 3000 calories a day but only burn 2000 guess what’s going to happen over time? Yep, bodyweight goes up. Focus on the total number of daily calories rather than the time of day when consumed.
3. Plant-based protein is the same as animal protein – FALSE
Plant-based protein carries a very small amount of an essential amino acid called Leucine which is responsible for building muscle. Animal protein on the other hand has high levels of Leucine and that is why it’s considered an essential amino acid.
4. Alcohol makes you fat – FALSE
The main issue with alcohol and weight loss is closely linked to our behaviours and environment when we drink. Burgers and beers, steak and wine, cocktails after cocktails. Did you know that 1 G&T only has around 90 calories? Our actions when we drink is the main issue, not the drink itself. Myself and many of my clients have been able to achieve fantastic results without having to completely cut out alcohol.
5. Keto/Vegan/Paleo/Vegetarian/Fasting... diet is best for losing weight – FALSE
ALL “diets” work for weight loss. The formula doesn’t change. Consume fewer calories than the ones you burn, THAT’S IT! It’s as simple as that, don’t overcomplicate it. Anyone can lose weight and only eat carbs just like that same person can lose weight and only eat vegetables. Do what works for you and most importantly, eat what you enjoy eating.
Hope you found that helpful.
