5 Common Design Mistakes to avoid when planning a Bedroom

Your bedroom is your sanctuary. It’s the place you go to relax, unwind and sleep. That’s why it’s so important to create a bedroom design that promotes good health and a restful night’s sleep.

Your bedroom should be designed for relaxation, sleep, and intimacy. It is the place where you retire at the end of a long day. You probably spend more hours in your bedroom than any other room in the house, so it is important to make it as comfortable as possible.

In this post, we go over 5 common bedroom design mistakes that every homeowner should avoid when designing their bedrooms.

1. Not having enough storage space

  • Not having enough storage space in your bedroom means that you are more likely to have clutter and chaos in your bedroom. This can lead to added stress and anxiety because you may not be able to relax in an environment that has clutter and chaos present.
  • Be sure that you have plenty of storage space in your bedroom so that you can store all of your belongings in an organized way and keep clutter out of sight and out of mind.

2. Buying A Bed That’s Too Big

  • Many people buy larger beds than they need for their bedrooms, this leads to not having enough empty space in the bedroom to move around. It’s important to choose a bed size that will not dominate the room but that fills out the space nicely.
  • Choosing the right size bed can give you the extra room you need to breathe, move, and sleep comfortably.
  • When buying a bed for your bedroom, you should consider the dimensions of the room. A bed should have two feet of walking space around it to have room to make the bed without knocking into walls. It’s also important to factor in space for the bedroom doors, closets, and drawers to open without any obstacles.

3. Forgetting about the ceilings

  • Your ceiling plays a major role in the feel of your bedroom, and it’s easy to forget about when you’re focused on the walls and floor. Even if you don’t want to do something dramatic like paint it an unexpected color or add a bold pattern, you can still make your room feel cozier and inviting by adding texture to it.
  • Adding soft lighting will also help make your ceiling feel less imposing, especially if it is high or vaulted.

4. Not Incorporating a headboard

  • A good headboard is essential for any bedroom. It frames the bed and makes it look more inviting. It can be used as a place to lean against if you need somewhere to rest.
  • The height of your ceiling and dimensions of the bedroom should decide how bulky or tall your headboard should be so measure before you take any action.

5. Poor Lighting

  • Lighting is often an overlooked aspect of bedroom design, but lighting design can make or break a room. A well thought out lighting scheme can create the perfect ambiance in your bedroom and help set the mood for restful nights.
  • Common lighting problems include not having enough light in a dark room, placing nightstand lamps too far apart, and neglecting overhead lighting. A good lighting design also includes strategically placed task lighting so you can easily read before bed or get ready in the morning.
