5 Changes in 5 Years

5 Changes in 5 Years

We find ourselves at a critical juncture in healthcare, with significant opportunities and challenges ahead. The role of technology and innovation has become increasingly crucial in addressing these issues. But how can we make a meaningful impact and have a different conversation in 5 years??

A recent report published by CD Howe noted that “Canada’s health care system is under pressure, there are many reasons for this, but underlying it all is the expanding nature of healthcare itself.” What exactly does this mean? As an example, personalized care has led to more treatment options, but more tests means more ordering and reviewing. And more drugs means more patient visits and potential drug interactions.?

The challenges extend across various facets of the health ecosystem, including Health Human Resources, Mental Health & Addictions, Access to Primary Care, Sustainable Payment Models, and Seniors Care. Recognizing the need for a different approach, I recently delivered a keynote presentation at a Digital Health Canada conference. In my presentation, I emphasized that Canadians aiming for a transformative conversation in five years should concentrate on the following five key areas:

  1. Prioritize technologies that accelerate impact on biggest problems
  2. Focus on health equity?
  3. Partnerships and aligning incentives??
  4. Increasing our tolerance for risk
  5. Prioritize Leadership & Governance??

Undoubtedly, innovation and technological disruption are indispensable in healthcare, necessitating the identification and dismantling of culturally embedded barriers. Achieving meaningful change requires a strategic, well-planned implementation in both the public and private sectors. Without such concerted efforts, big changes to the Canadian healthcare agenda will not happen without it.?

Well said Tara. Unfortunately this has been said for years so now we all need to embrace the uncertainty and just lean in. We’ll fail but we’ll also gain new insights, create opportunities for innovation and all that benefits patients.
