Owners of all types of businesses are increasingly aware of the importance of a strong digital presence. Having a website that hasn’t been updated since 2018 will no longer cut it if you want to attract new customers.
But with the pressure to constantly refresh your website and social media content, it can be easy to fall into some classic content marketing mistakes.
Here are the top 5 to avoid:
1. Making it all about you: It’s surprising how many SMEs make their social media feed all about their business, not their customers. Your clients don’t care that much about your long list of qualifications or about your latest industry gong – they simply want to know how your product or service can benefit them. Sure, mention the qualifications and awards, but don’t make them the focus of your feed.
2. Making it all about sales: Of course, the bottom line is that we are all trying to sell more of our products and services. However, there is no quicker way to turn off followers than making every post, or every second post, a direct sales plug. Intersperse the hard sell with relevant content that your followers will find valuable and interesting. For example, if you run a hairdressing salon, publish a blog on the top new trends to try now.
3. Lack of follow-up: Treat direct messaging on platforms like LinkedIn and Facebook as you would email. If you would normally answer your emails within one to two working days, then you should be aiming to answer your DMs just as quickly, if not more quickly.
4. Lack of engagement: When you write a schedule for social media posting, make sure to allocate time for responding to people’s comments. Social media is all about two-way communication – there’s no point putting out sparkling content if you then ignore the remarks it generates.
5. Not having a content strategy: Do you know what you are trying to achieve with content marketing? Building awareness of your business, more conversions, more visitors to your website? You need to have a clear goal in mind before you start writing your schedule and creating your posts.
