Since the election, Black women have doubled down on leveraging our $1 trillion spending power within our community.
In this article, I’m excited to share how Black authors and publishers can get involved. Here are five Black-owned apps that are making a significant impact for authors and readers alike.
1. Literally Black: A Hub for Black Literature
Literally Black is a Black-owned literary space dedicated to showcasing books by Black authors and offering bookish merchandise, curated book boxes, and more. This platform connects readers with stories that reflect Black experiences and culture while fostering a community of literature lovers. Their membership, The Cookout, provides bi-monthly book boxes and engaging discussions among a close-knit group of Black readers.
2. The StoryGraph: Tailored Reading Experiences
Founded by Nadia Odunayo, The StoryGraph is a freemium app that offers personalized book recommendations and insightful reading analytics. I love how it allows users to track their reading habits while connecting with fellow book lovers, making it easier to discover new works by diverse authors.
3. We Read Too: Connecting Young Readers with Diverse Stories
Developed by Kaya Thomas, We Read Too is a free mobile app designed to help young readers find books written by authors of color. This platform is essential for promoting diverse literature among younger audiences, ensuring they have access to stories that reflect their experiences and broaden their perspectives.
4. Fable: A Digital Book Club for Black Authors
Fable is transforming the book club experience by focusing on works by Black authors. This digital platform creates a space where readers can engage in meaningful discussions about literature while fostering community connections centered around shared reading experiences.
5. Spoiler Talk: Discussing Media Without Spoilers
Spoiler Talk is an innovative mobile app that allows users to discuss their favorite shows, movies, books, and podcasts without revealing spoilers. I appreciate how this platform creates a safe space for fans to share their thoughts and reactions while respecting others' viewing or reading experiences.
I encourage you all to not only create accounts but see about adding your books to their platforms and encouraging your communities to support them as well.
