5 Benefits to a Workplace Wellbeing Program

In recent times I've had many conversations with corporations about what they offer their employees around wellbeing with various comments that simply dont quite cut it.

'It's a grey area'

'we don't have an issue with that here'

'it's not a priority right now' and many more comments which is causing companies to miss a trick when it comes to looking after the people who help their business move forward.

That being said it does have to be about much more than just an adhock workout class, gym membership and a fruit basket, they really the workplace version of ticking the box of wellbeing but doing very little else. In fact what these do is offer something to the ones who actually probably don't need the support. It's always the same people who do the classes, join the gym and have the fruit basket. All the while the lower confidence busy working mum who's struggling slips by the wayside, more needs to be done and prevention is better than cure.

The concept of workplace wellbeing has gained significant attention in recent years as organizations have recognized the impact of employee wellness on productivity, engagement, and retention. As a result, many companies have implemented wellbeing programs to support their employees' physical, mental, and emotional health. In this article, we will discuss the benefits of wellbeing programs in the workplace.

  1. Improved Employee Health

Wellbeing programs in the workplace can encourage employees to adopt healthier lifestyles, which can lead to a reduction in chronic illnesses such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. For example, a study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that employees who participated in a worksite wellness program had a significant decrease in their body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure levels.

2. Increased Employee Engagement

Wellbeing programs can help to create a positive work environment, which can increase employee engagement and motivation. When employees feel that their employer cares about their wellbeing, they are more likely to be committed to their job and perform at a higher level. According to a study by the World Economic Forum, organizations that prioritize employee wellbeing have a 10% increase in employee engagement.

3. Higher Employee Retention

Wellbeing programs can also improve employee retention rates. When employees feel valued and supported by their employer, they are more likely to stay with the company long-term. A study by the Society for Human Resource Management found that organizations with wellness programs had a turnover rate that was 7% lower than those without such programs.

4. Reduced Healthcare Costs

Wellbeing programs can also help to reduce healthcare costs for both employers and employees. By encouraging healthier lifestyles and providing resources for preventive care, organizations can reduce the number of employees who need medical treatment for chronic illnesses. A study by the American Journal of Health Promotion found that wellness programs can reduce healthcare costs by an average of $3.27 for every dollar spent.

5. Improved Corporate Image

Organizations that prioritize employee wellbeing are often viewed more positively by consumers and job seekers. A study by Cone Communications found that 71% of consumers are more likely to buy from a company that supports social and environmental issues, including employee wellness.

In conclusion, wellbeing programs in the workplace offer a range of benefits for both employers and employees. By promoting healthier lifestyles, increasing engagement and retention rates, reducing healthcare costs, and improving corporate image, these programs can contribute to a more productive and positive work environment.
