5 Benefits For Introducing Apprenticeships into Your Business

An apprenticeship is a genuine employment position with an accompanying assessment and skills development program. The apprentice gains valuable skills and knowledge in a specific job role through a wide mix of learning in the workplace, formal off-the-job training, and the opportunity to practice new skills in a real work environment.

Apprenticeships not only benefit the individual, but it also benefits the employer.

Further in this post, we’ll go into 5 ways in which employers can benefit from introducing the apprenticeship scheme into their business;

1. Fresh Ideas

Apprentices that have been moulded around your business are more likely to generate a creative boost - as apprentices bring a fresh new perspective that will help your business to approach tasks creatively.

The way apprentices approach problem solving is vastly different from other staff, and that can often lead to new and innovative ways of working. When using technology, for example, apprentices are often keen to improve processes or find ways of speeding them up.

2. Skill Gap Filling

With any growing business, new tasks, challenges, and skills are put forth for employees and employers to overcome. If these tasks, challenges, and skills are not addressed, then growth can be halted, which, in turn, can be detrimental to a business's health.

Identifying skill gaps in your business is an endeavour in itself, but once identified the use of apprenticeships is one way to match talent with the specific skills. Apprenticeships give the employer the ability to tailor learning to specific job roles that are needed within the business.

3. Staff Loyalty and Retention

Staff retention for any business is vital, as the recruitment and training process can be long and tedious, with major implications if key staff members leave.

Successful Apprentices regularly become loyal, long-standing members of staff rising through the ranks of the firm with little disruption to operations.

According to data from the National Apprenticeship Service, 73% of companies that have taken on apprentices believe this leads to a more motivated and satisfied workforce and 69% have seen a significant increase in employee retention as 65% of apprentices stay working for the company that trained them when they complete their apprenticeship. Meanwhile, more than half (57%) of employers report a high proportion of their Apprentices going on to management positions.

4. Freeing up Existing Staff

By introducing an apprentice, you are able to designate smaller tasks that would normally take up the time of experienced staff, which then allows the more experienced staff members to concentrate on key areas of work. Designating these basic tasks to apprentices enables them to learn and take responsibility.

By delegating appropriate work, your business should increase productivity.

5. Financial Sense

The whole process of recruiting and training through an apprenticeship scheme is more cost-effective in the long term than hiring skilled staff.

Apprenticeships are even more cost-effective if you are able to obtain funding from the levy government tax. This funding is available for selected businesses, and if eligible, you have control over how you spend your funding for your apprenticeship training.

Did you know?

Every time a business hires an apprentice, they receive, on average, a bottom-line boost of around £2,000 once wage and training costs have been factored in.
