5 BASIC ACTIONS TO LIVE A MEANINGFUL LIFE

I used to think living a meaningful life was all about living for others and denying myself of my personal yearnings and needs. I thoughts it was about living to standards and best practices, however, the more I tried to be the best for everyone except me, the more difficult existence flung itself at me.

Yes it is okay to think of other people's needs, but what happens when you are no longer there to meet people's expectations because you no longer have the strength to put up a bright face, you no longer have what it takes to carry other peoples burdens, there is nothing left in you to give because you didn't know you were supposed to live first to be able to carry others?

The best way to live is to live on your own terms, based on your core needs and beliefs.

The truth is, when God sent us here, he didn’t just drop us without a compass…a guide to follow to fulfill our time. Now the problem isn’t that we were not given a path to follow, the problem is that people who didn't discover their own part were already waiting to show us a road that hasn’t led them anywhere.

We often mistake living for accomplishments that we forget to even live.

Around April, 2020, I decided I was going to research about life. I was determined to know if truly one can be happy on earth. I know we can be happy but i'm yet to discover if one can be nothing but happy at all times…but what I do know as of today is happiness is a state of mind, happiness is a decision, happiness is subjective…it is a personal experience and it manifests in different people in different ways…however, life can be more meaning and worth living if we take out time to carry out these basic steps:

  1. Become Self-aware: you cannot know happiness when you don’t even know what makes you happy. You must know yourself, your needs, and your path to lead a meaningful life.
  2. Invest in Your Mental Health: the surest way to discover yourself and be more self-aware is being able to put your thoughts together without interference from external factors like religion, traditions, or societal or institutional norms.
  3. Prioritize yourself: you won’t know about this or its benefits until you’ve invested in your mental health. They will not be them if there was no you!
  4. Follow Your Own Rythm: the first lie you are unconsciously sold is that you have to be better than someone else. Yes, no one wants to be last but how can you know where you belong when you don’t even know yourself? Have you asked yourself if it really wants what you are after?
  5. Take Responsibility for Your Life: it is easier to blame other people for your life when the one to be blamed is you who refused to follow your own rhythm. How can you even follow your own rhythm when others dictates your tune?

Life is meaningful to every one according to the meaning individually attached to it. I hope this opens your eyes to understanding and helps you to take life one day at a time.
