Five B Corps who inspired us to be a better business

As we continue to fly through #bcorpmonth, this week's focus is on customers and community partnerships! This is too big for a normal post so have written this article instead.

Being part of the almost 4,000 strong #BCorp community, it's our objective to continue to improve and be inspired by other businesses who set a great example, but also do what we can to inspire others too.

Here are 5 B Corps who inspire us to be better businesses!

allplants

I've been buying their plant-based meals for years, they are delicious, healthy and convenient (saves me getting a takeaway!). ???? Jonathan Petrides, Alex Petrides and the team are a lovely bunch we had the pleasure of doing a little digital discovery audit for.

It's these guys who I first saw proudly displaying their B Corp status. What I love is their 100% vegan, 0% judgement ethos.

Wholegrain Digital

There are quite a few excellent web and marketing agencies within the #Bcorp community, all of whom are doing exceptional work and being welcoming to fellow agencies.

Tom Greenwood and the team are setting the standard when it comes to sustainable web design, he's written a brilliant book on the subject - highly recommended and lots we are implementing at Selesti!

Patagonia

What there isn't to say about this incredible business that drives so much positive change within their industry and business in general, after all, they are ‘in the business of saving our home planet’.

They were one of the first businesses to sign up as a B Corp and switch people’s mindsets about consumerism.  Their famous Black Friday ‘Don’t Buy This Jacket’ campaign highlighted the consumption of resources required to make one jacket.  They offer to repair damaged gear and recycle anything else.  The line ‘Together we reimagine a world where we take only what nature can replace’ epitomises why Patagonia is such an inspiration to the B Corp community and beyond.

I still need to get round to reading Patagonia Founder Yvon Youndard’s book - Let Let My People Go Surfing: The Education of a Reluctant Businessman.

Ella’s Kitchen

My 2-year daughter, BB loved Ella’s Kitchen food when she was younger and we regularly create many plant-based recipes.  It’s great to see a food and drinks brand which has such a high profile representing the B Corp movement.  Thats so many more consumers becoming aware of the movement, wondering what the logo is all about, just like I was when I saw it.

Not only that but they really are heeding their commitment that business should be used as a force for good, pledging to reduce their carbon emissions to net-zero by 2030.

They also work hard towards the UN Sustainability Development Goals focussing their efforts on (2) Zero Hunger, (12) Responsible Consumption & Production and (17) Partnerships for the Goals.

It was Through their packaging recycling scheme 'EllaCycle' that I first heard about TerraCycle.  Thats where you can take items that aren’t suitable for household recycling schemes, such as toothbrushes, crisp packets, pens and of course, plastic Ella’s Kitchen pouches.

Brewdog

Here’s a company I have admired for years, they aren’t entirely disruptive, but they definitely shake things up!

They became a certified B Corp last month which will not have been an easy task with so many moving parts to be accountable for and measure against.

They are carbon negative, achieving this ahead of their target of 2030.  By carbon negative, they have reduced their carbon footprint to less than neutral, in effect removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere rather than adding to it.  How?  They have created the Brewdog forest in Scotland removing twice as much carbon each year than they emit whilst simultaneously doing all they can to drive their emissions to zero.

Brewdog's FU*K You C02 campaign

What inspires me about them, aside from their incredible vegan-friendly beer selection and Biff’s Jack Shack & BOSH! food collaborations are they aren’t purely offsetting.  They are investing to go much, much further.  It’s an exciting company to see become B Corp! Here’s to having a planet positive pint!

There are so many incredible B Corps now, a community that continues to grow.  I'm taking a course in May to become a B Leader, to help support businesses become B Corps. It is the future of business and I would happily speak to anyone who is interested in finding out more and certification.

?? Thanks so much for including us Ollie. I can't think of a better place to be than in a list between allplants and Patagonia. You've made me blush! Hehe. I love what you are doing at Selesti and look forward to learning more from you guys in the future.
