5 AVIATION TRENDS TO WATCH FOR IN 2022
The aviation industry has emerged from its darkest period caused by the pandemic. However, numerous contingencies must be managed indefinitely. Despite this, it appears that certain aviation trends are developing that will dominate in 2022. Here are a few examples of them.
1. LOW-COST AIRLINES WILL EXPAND THEIR MARKET SHARE. GLOBALLY
According to IBA, the leading aviation data, intelligence, and advisory firm, over 130 new airlines will begin operations by the end of 2022. 40% of these airlines are expected to be based in Europe. One reason for this anticipated growth is the adoption of the low-cost, long-haul business model by both current low-cost airlines, which is also expected in the future.
2. CO2 EMISSION REDUCTION WILL CONTINUE TO BE A MAJOR REQUIREME
Currently most of the major Airlines have signed on to the initiative to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is expected to ratify the plan in 2022. The primary focus for achieving this goal will be increased use of environmentally friendly aviation fuel (SAF). Other measures will include greater use of electric vehicles (i.e., for ground handling operations and electric air taxis).
3. SMART AIRPORTS WILL BE MADE EASIER THAN EVER BECAUSE OF INCREASED DIGITALIZATION
As an aviation trend, expect to see an increase in "smart" airports by 2022, which use digital technologies to advance operations ranging from check-in processes and security clearances to automated and paperless boarding.?

These have arisen partly due to the pandemic and efforts to reduce human-to-human contact. This strategy is already being promoted through automated kiosks and digital signage. However, 2022 will likely see wider adoption of advanced technologies such as AI and machine learning to meet this goal further. AI and machine learning, IoT and cloud technology will become more widely used as connected devices allow airport management to better access and apply trillions of terabytes of data to gain better operational insights into diverse processes. These range from check-in habits and airport retail spending to security procedures and travel patterns.
4. NARROW-BODY AIRCRAFT WILL OUTPERFORM WIDE-BODY AIRCRAFT ON MANY TRANSATLANTIC ROUTES.
Another trend that is expected in 2022 is the replacement of wide-body aircraft with narrow-body aircraft. While wide-body aircraft such as the Airbus A330 and A350, as well as Boeing's 777 and 787, are ideal for the longest routes, they also have higher ownership and operational costs than their smaller, narrow-body counterparts. They also carry higher financial risks in difficult markets like the one we're in now. As a result of these realities and the increased range now available in models like the Airbus A321 and Boeing 737, these aircraft are likely to see increased use in 2022. Narrow-body aircraft are expected to dominate departures for the summer of 2022, particularly on shorter-haul flights from the United States to Europe.
5. BUSINESS TRAVEL WILL BE MORE EFFECTIVE
Business travel, which has declined sharply since the pandemic, is expected to rebound in 2022. Cerium, a global aviation analytics organization, predicts a yearly 36% increase in business travel. "I am always optimistic about aviation," said IATA Director General Willie Walsh. We are in the midst of the most serious crisis in human history. However, the rapidly growing vaccinated population and advancements in testing will allow people to fly again in the coming months. And when that occurs, people will want to travel."
