5-4-3-2-1... Go!

5-4-3-2-1-... Go!

Hold up. What does this mean? I'll tell you. I love Mel Robbins and I've been following her work for a while. A while back she discovered the 5-4-3-2-1 countdown technique. She uses this when she hesitates to make a decision.

The 5 Second Rule is simple. If you have an instinct to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill it. The moment you feel an instinct or a desire to act on a goal or a commitment, use the Rule.

To quote Mel, “any thought that you have that you let linger in your brain for more than 5 seconds, your brain kills—contaminates—your motivation and courage to act.” To break this cycle, "the moment you feel yourself hesitate … just start counting backwards—5-4-3-2-1—then you move.

I didn't think it would work. BUT it does. I struggle to wake up in the morning and get going. I count, in my head, "5-4-3-2-1," and I'm out of bed. I have a hard time making decisions and I've been incorporating this rule in my every day life-what soda should I buy, what dog treats do I get, which movie should I see...etc.

Here's how you can use the 5 Second rule

  • Before giving a talk at a public event
  • Before introducing yourself to someone of importance
  • Before going for a run, the gym, or another form of exercise
  • Before attending a social occasion
  • Before we hit the snooze button and go back to sleep
  • When we get angry and before we start to argue
  • When we get impatient in the car and before we beep our horn
  • Before we partake in any negative habit
  • Before you present in a big meeting
  • Before an interview

We're tricking our brain into calming down. Since I've been unemployed, I've stopped doing the 5 Second rule in the morning to get out of bed. BUT, I need to get back in the habit of doing this.

I'm curious... Have you heard about 5 Second rule?

The 5 second rule is so true. Whenever a lightbulb moment hits, be it dinner idea or startup idea, either act right away or jot it down on a note book. Thanks much for sharing!
