???Banning ChatGPT doesn’t solve any issue in the workplace. Instead, Companies urgently need to develop a Workplace AI strategy. Four M’s - Multiplier, Magic, Mistakes, And Mayhem - help frame the Workplace AI strategy and helps HR and Business leaders think through how AI impacts the workforce, according to a new interesting interesting research published by Forrester . While employees are optimistic about how AI and generative AI, in particular will affect their work, feelings vary considerably by seniority and by country, according to another new interesting research published by 波士顿谘询公司 using data from 12,898 employees from executive suite leaders to middle managers and frontline employees in 18 countries.
?Leaders use more Generative AI than employees
Researchers also discovered that 80% of leaders say that they use generative AI regularly but only 20% of frontline employees say that they do so.
?? This disparity in AI usage between leaders and frontline employees likely contributes to the vastly different levels of optimism they expressed.
?Optimism about AI is rising, and concern is falling
Researchers found that among the top 5 feelings about the impact of AI on work in 2023 and 2018, curiosity and optimism increase, but worry decreases significantly.
?The new concept of 4M's of workplace AI
Another interesting research from Forrester highlights a concept of 4M's of workplace AI :
??Multiplier: AI generates massive scale improvements measured by orders of magnitude.
Researchers believed that creating personalized communications for customers at scale becomes feasible using large language models (LLMs) and generative pretrained transformers (GPTs), changing how marketers develop their campaigns. There are similar opportunities lying in wait across your business, problems to which you can apply the multiplier effect of AI to solve.

??Magic: AI shocks employees with its insights and performance compared with human labor.
Millions of everyday users have experienced its seemingly magical ability to answer questions. So savvy are generative AI LLMs that they can hold multiturn conversations (keeping the context of the topic in mind); these capabilities open up the possibility of?individual GPT tutors?that can personalize learning in real time based on the conversation that they have with one of your employees. This magic aids workforce adoption: Employees are eager to try it out.
?? Mistakes: AI causes real harm to customers and processes when used without humans in the loop.
Enterprise leaders who we talk to are keeping in mind AI’s potential to make mistakes some of which are deeply troubling. Absent human intervention, AI can make harmful decisions, like?granting?a husband a 20 times higher credit limit than his wife … even though she had a higher credit score and income, apparently due to algorithmic gender discrimination. Think about how your customers might react to similar errors.
??Mayhem: AI goes outside of its training to generate hallucinations
Researchers warn about the technology’s proclivity to generate “coherent nonsense.” It can “hallucinate,” spitting out content that is nonsensical or unfaithful to its training data. The resulting mayhem will make your risk managers’ hair stand on end.
??Finally BCG researchers made 3 recommendations for Leaders to succeed their AI Strategy:
1?? Ensure that there are spaces for responsible experimentation?
2?? Invest in regular upskilling
3??Prioritize building a responsible AI program
Forrester researchers conclude that successfully applying the four M’s requires a human-centered strategy. The AI workforce strategy requires lots of?human?participation. That’s because every AI deployment sits atop human foundations, without which you can’t appropriately harness its power. These human foundations include a series of skills, inclinations, beliefs, norms, and structures.

1 年I am in agreement with you Nicolas - organisations need to create a workplace AI strategy to ensure that the outcomes of utilising AI are employed in the correct context. AI creates a mound of data - not all of which adds value and, in some cases, used in the wrong context it can create total 'mayhem' leading to a costly outcome. Thank you for, again, sharing another thought-provoking post.

1 年Nicolas BEHBAHANI Very nice research and typology of openAI implications. Also, fascinating to see how different groups perceive openAI. One of the things I like about the 4 M's is that different perceptions exist by different people. All 4 M's likely exist. OpenAI disruptions will affect people differently, but as researchers (and you) say, it is coming (and here) and needs to be understood and used not banned.
