This Week on The A.I. Healthcare Report
Welcome to the Forty-Ninth Edition of the AI Healthcare Report!
Welcome to the Forty-Ninth Edition of the A.I. Healthcare Report! I hope every one of you had the opportunity to reflect this weekend on why we recognize Memorial Day as a federal holiday. We are now less than 90 days til college football! The Texas Rangers still stand in second place in the AL West, while the Astros are still in third place in the division. Since this is the last edition of the month, A.I. healthcare initiatives will also be highlighted.
With each issue, I hope we can learn from each other.

State Updates
Medical Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have developed an A.I. tool, which could greatly reduce the need for surgery.
Study leader, Professor of Radiology, Director of Breast Imaging Research, and member of the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center at UT Southwestern, Dr. Basak Dogan, MD, was quoted as saying the following:
"Determining nodal status is critical in guiding treatment decisions, but traditional imaging techniques alone do not have enough sensitivity to rule out axillary metastasis. That often requires patients to undergo invasive procedures that involve radioisotope and dye injection followed by surgery to remove and test whether the axillary nodes harbor cancer cells.”
The integration of A.I. at Valley Baptist Health System is improving stroke treatment for patients in the Rio Grande Valley.
Dr. Ameer Hassan, Head of the Neuroscience Department was quoted as saying the following:
“We’ve seen that we’ve decreased the length of stay, we continue to prove outcomes, we continue to decrease the door in door out, so when a patient arrives let’s say at Valley Baptist Brownsville they get screened quickly and then they’re out of that hospital already on the way to Valley Baptist Harlingen to get their treatment...We were able to cut that time in half by implementing artificial intelligence.”
Phoenix-based Banner Health is looking to bring improve the efficiency of its surgical facilities.
Dr. Nirav Patel, MD, Medical Director of Surgical and Procedural Services at Banner Health, was quoted as saying the following:
"As the healthcare environment just gets more and more complex, we really started looking to say, 'How do we streamline our processes to allow us to get our patients timely care?'?But, at the same time, how do we not overburden our teams, whether it's the surgeons' offices, our schedulers and periop teams? How do you find that balance where you can streamline that process across the board..."
Patel continued by saying the following:
"What we found was a lot of this being done manually. A lot of faxes, a lot of communication misses and a lot of things being done by 'gut.' We started to look for a partner who could help us from a technology perspective. The aim was not to take away all the expertise we had, but to optimize it and have technology streamline processes that were pretty mundane..."
Arizona obtains guidance on how to effectively use artificial intelligence in classrooms.
Chad Geston, former Phoenix Union High School Superintendent and Founder of the Arizona Institute for Education and the Economy was quoted as saying the following:
"AI tools can help not just with lesson planning and with grading but also help drive learning. Whether that's a chatbot or tutoring avatars are ways in which we can really help students hear themselves and practice public speaking."
Geston continued by saying the following:
"We believe that AI will become a bridge if, in fact, we leverage this technology well."
