Ever have one of those moments where you just take a jump. Well, the Saxon Fall Festival was on of those moments. I was looking for content opportunities and I just happened to see a FB friend post they had completed making apple butter for the weekends Fall Festival. Was their time? What would I need? How would I prepare?
All questions I needed to answer. It all started with a quick phone call, I wasn't even sure who to talk to, but I was directed to the right person. As it turned out, my initial story of covering the apple butter process, got more interesting. The event was going to have all types of vendors from many different trades and was expecting thousands of visitors.
This shoot was done as a story for my brand Heartland Eats and Treats (heartlandeatsandtreats.com) and I didn't have a lot of time to plan. Much of the shoot was going to be "on the fly" or "run & gun" so this required me to be on my toes come production day.
I arrived early, before sunrise. You can see here, the early stages of making apple butter, It was a great opportunity to test the low light capability of my Panasonic EVA. It's a few years old, but it sill performs very well, especially with prime lenses.
There were two videos made from the Saxon Fall Festival Shoot, but I didn't know that at the time of production.
VIDEO: Below is a dedicated spot-on making Apple Butter, as it turns out, its been done the same way for generations.

While editing, I decided to use a halation filter effect to provide a nice organic glow around the highlights, just subtle enough. You can see it in the shot above with the table with the lantern. If you look at the highlights, you can see a glow, but what makes this awesome is that it is still in focus. To give the footage a nice vintage yet high-quality appearance, this was just perfect.
Jennifer was amazing to interview. I wish more interviews would go this well. We had to work quick for the interview, so we used an unoccupied room in the upper main cabin. Using natural light and some positioning provided a nice "Rembrandt style" look.
The ambassador's are Brian and Jennie Williamson, and both with a background of 23 years in the music industry, they moved on site to gain the beauty and peace of the site grounds. After visiting they fell in love and became involved in the mission and vision of the Saxon Lutheran Memorial. They moved from Nashville, TN area to the SLM farmhouse late spring 2023.
You can find more information about them at Saxon Lutheran Memorial.
The early settlers fell in love with area, and it's hard to not see why. The whole area is filled with rolling hills.
