47 Questions to Ask Your Growth Mentor
I’ve been doing a lot of user testing lately and one of the most common things I’ve been hearing is, “I’m not sure what sort of questions to ask my mentor!”
This post is being written to answer that question.
Hopefully, it can also offer some inspiration on talking points so that you can get the most value out of your sessions.
Mentorship is valuable because you can learn from others’ stories and journeys.
Be inquisitive, ask questions, try and fill in the blanks and create mental patterns from the answers you get.

How to maximize your value, a few tips
Here are some tips on how to get the maximum bang for your time on growth mentor calls.
- Ask your mentor if they’d be cool with you recording your screen with Loom – it’ll reduce your mental load of having to take notes in realtime. Just review the tape.
- Do most of the talking in the first few minutes to set the stage
- Give contextual information to help paint the picture of your current situation.
- Growth mentors will be asking you lots of questions, answer them as honest as possible.
- Be concise and focused. Small talk is fine in moderation, don’t overdo it. You’re on a call for a specific reason. Be mindful of that at all times.
- Pay attention to the words coming out of your own mouth, the best case scenario is for you to answer your own questions without the mentor having to tell you what to do.
- Come into this with realistic expectations. They’re mentors, not magicians.
- Don’t feel pressure, just relax. There’s no right/wrong way to do this. Avoid binary thinking.
- Try to form mental patterns, especially if you speak with multiple mentors. Pay attention to metadata.
- Don’t be afraid to push the boundaries of question asking. Be inquisitive. Stories are gold.
- Embrace alternative views. If you can stomach it, ask the mentors to play devil’s advocate and role play a customer filled with objections.
- Be friendly and authentic. If you’re likable, the mentors will be your biggest supporters (even after the call is over).
