#46 - LinkedIn Is For Networking. No, Really.

The new?Jobseeking is Hard ?is out now! This week I'm talking about using LinkedIn in a way that actually works, including:

  • Why your networking efforts might not be working, and why you should keep at it. (Premium Subscribers will receive info on the best ways to message your network for help, including alternatives to LinkedIn, as well as a networking script for a company you applied to!)
  • How certain buzzwords or descriptions on a LinkedIn profile can capture a recruiter’s attention. (For Premium Subscribers , I’ll give you a quick breakdown of which profile areas you want to focus on and why.)

And don't forget about the Stupid Interview Questions, a jobseeking horror story about a company that says they aren't micro-managers...and then proceeds to micro-manage literally everything, and ANOTHER subscriber who found a new job is sharing their win!

Job search is tough! I’m focused on building a network outside of LinkedIn and on this platform. I’m having more success of going to in person networking events, but I’m still pushing

I gave up this week. If there's anything that the current job market taught me is how to "read the room" and just settle.

LinkedIn is a cool kids club, these tactics don’t work. Cool kids never have the time.

I'm very disappointed that you think so-called soft skills aren't important. I'm a Museum Educator/Living Historian (think Williamsburg), and those skills are vitally important to what we do. I've worked under a couple of supervisors who didn't have those skills, and morale was incredibly low.

I liked your answer about LI networking. People can't give up if some people don't reply (and your reasoning for that makes sense). Since the letter writer mentioned "glowing letters of recommendation", it's worth reminding him/her that those letters have far more impact (will be seen by recruiters) if the recommendations are on their LI profile. It's at the bottom and very underused by most (as is the volunteer section).
