#449: "How to Manage Change" from MindTools
Eric Garner
Author of 37 books on soft skills, founder of ManageTrainLearn and 6 e-learning websites, creator of 22,000+ e-learning resources, all free to access or download, owner of daily "People Skills" newsletter
In this edition of the "People Skills" newsletter, we are taking our first look at 10 videos from MindTools, one of the foremost UK learning and development companies. Each of these videos covers the topic of change management including how to use the Wheel of Life; what the Inverted U Model is; and change models from Kurt Lewin and John Kotter.
So, here they are...
01. How to Tell Your Bosses They're Wrong
We all like to be right, but we can't be right all of the time. Errors made by managers and leaders can be particularly costly – and, in some cases, disastrous. But, if your organization's wellbeing and your own integrity matter to you, it's important to conquer your fears and to speak up. It may feel unnatural and risky, and it may go against your office culture, but, when you're graceful and adept, you can help your boss to put things right without upsetting anyone.
02. The Change Curve
The prospect of change in an organization can be daunting for many. Ingrained ways of working and fear of what the change might mean for your people can mean that they will try to resist it. But it doesn't have to be this way. With careful management, you can minimize any negative impact your planned change might have on your team and you can help your people adapt to it quickly and effectively.
03. How to Use the Wheel of Life to Achieve Balance
If you lead a busy life, you'll be familiar with how some things that are important to you suddenly drop off your radar. It's not that you're no longer interested in them, it's just other priorities have taken their place. But, when this goes on long enough, it can create an imbalance in our lives that can leave us feeling frazzled and depleted. The Wheel of Life diagram helps you step back and think about what's important to you.
04. Using the Inverted U Model to Balance Pressure and Performance
Pressure can help or hinder team performance. Too little pressure and people can become bored or demotivated. Too much pressure and they may start to become stressed and burnt out. But, if you get the balance of pressure just right, you can optimize your team's performance, while also keeping them happy and engaged. The Inverted-U Model explains this delicate balance between pressure and performance.
05. Lewin's Change Management Model
The concept of "change management" is a familiar one in most businesses today. But, how businesses manage change (and how successful they are at it) varies enormously depending on the nature of the business, the change, and the people involved. And a key part of this depends on how far people within it understand the change process. One of the cornerstone models for understanding organizational change was developed by Kurt Lewin back in the 1950s and still holds true today.
06. The Four Stages Of Coping With Change
Chances are that, at some stage, you've experienced a big change in your life. Maybe it was a positive one. Starting a new job, or moving house, for instance. Or, perhaps it was painful. Losing your job or taking a pay cut, for example. Depending on your specific situation, your reaction will have varied from excitement to fear. But, in all cases, your attitude toward the change likely affected your experience of it.
07. Coping With Uncertainty
The world is an uncertain place. Things change fast, and it can be difficult to see what's coming next. But with the right approach, you can make things easier for yourself, learn to be comfortable with uncertainty, and be prepared for whatever the future brings. Here are six simple strategies for coping when things get messy...
08. How to Manage in a VUCA World
We live in a VUCA world, where rapid and unpredictable change has become the norm. But what does “VUCA” actually mean?

10. Kotter's 8-Step Change Model
This video introduces leadership and change management guru John Kotter's 8-Step Change Model. With it, you can create a sense of urgency for the prospective change, recruit powerful change leaders, and you will build a vision and effectively communicate it to the organization. You'll also remove any obstacles to your planned change, implement quick wins, and build on the momentum that you have created. All of which will help your change unfold successfully.
