Africa’s Rising Geopolitical Star: Analyzing BRICS and Beyond

At the Southern African Institute for Strategic Futures and Foresight, our mission is to provide comprehensive insights into transformative global events that will drive the future.

Following the recent BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, from October 22-24, 2024, we’re focusing on a pivotal question: What role will Africa play in the emerging geopolitical order? Indeed, as forward thinking, forward planning individuals, we should also then ask ourselves, “What role do we want Africa to play, and what can we do to help achieve that?”

A Snapshot of BRICS

When BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) merged into BRICS with the addition of South Africa in 2010, there were no clear indications of future growth as far as membership was concerned. However, steadfast commitment and resilient implementation of the group’s goals ensured that BRICS has now has grown into a formidable force with nine full members, including three African nations: South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia.

Together, these countries:

  • Represent 44% of the global population (approximately 3.57 billion people).
  • Contribute over $26 trillion in combined GDP - about 36.7% of the global economy.

Adding to their influence, BRICS has extended so-called partnerships to 13 additional countries, including Nigeria, Uganda, and Algeria, further underscoring Africa’s centrality in this growing coalition. The other 10 countries are Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
